Academic Advisor II
Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Advisor II at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):
This is a 100% Grant funded position.
Essential Functions (Job Duties):
• Provide academic support and accommodations for an assigned caseload of SSS-eligible students with disabilities.
• Interact with University students with disabilities to assess program eligibility.
• Read, interpret and analyze medical and functional capacity documentation.
• Review, recommend, and determine reasonable accommodations, auxiliary aids/services for students with disabilities.
• Maintain accurate record of communication, service provision, and student engagement for assessment and reporting purposes.
• Communicate effectively and accurately academic and non-academic requirements, policies, and procedures.
• Maintain continuous advising relationships with students; effectively engage students in broad discussion from initial college preparedness through career planning; monitor and communicate using university systems, social media, small group, and face-to-face sessions, as appropriate.
• Coordinate retention efforts.
• Demonstrate ability to act as liaison with other units; participate in meetings and work as a member of a team.
• Collaborate proactively and effectively with campus partners to provide services to eligible students.
• Advise prospective and current undergraduate, post-bachelor, and graduate students; provide a comprehensive suite of advising and disability related services; prepare work plans; advise potential and current students regarding admission, major and educational requirements and career planning.
• Conduct information sessions and provide academic advising and disability related awareness on the main campus and at extension centers.
• Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures, technological tools, etc. with regard to persons with disabilities and advising.
• Work with minimal supervision.
• Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as needed and requested.
• Provide own transportation to work and work-related events

• Master's degree required, in education, counseling, social work or related field.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to persons with disabilities.
• Previous work experience in higher education or related non-profit setting.
• Ability to relate well and establish rapport with students, other staff, faculty, parents, and community.
• Computer skills commonly used in an office setting.
• Demonstrated excellence in time management and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated excellence in written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse student population with varying academic preparedness levels.
Preferred Qualifications
Licensed or license eligible in the State of Michigan in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, or
social work (desired).
