Social & Emotional Wellness Coordinator

The Social & Emotional Wellness Coordinator supports BGCSENC's organization-wide effort to become a fully trauma-informed Club by delivering on-site trauma-informed programming, staff coaching, and referral coordination at their assigned Club (Nixon or Vance). Working under the direct supervision of the Director of Youth Wellness & Trauma-Informed Care, this part-time role helps translate the 12-month, four-phase Trauma-Informed Practices Initiative (Foundation, Expansion, Deepening, Sustaining) into day-to-day practice supporting staff, youth, and families in alignment with BGCA's Seven Elements of a Trauma-Informed Club: Awareness, Safety, Trust, Equity, Empowerment/Voice & Choice, Mutual Collaboration, and Connection & Growth.

Major Responsibilities

1. Site-Based Trauma-Informed Leadership

Serve as the on-site champion for trauma-informed practice at the assigned Club (Nixon or Vance), modeling and reinforcing BGCA's Seven Elements of a Trauma-Informed Club in daily programming.

Provide real-time coaching and de-escalation support to front-line staff during programming.

Participate in the Trauma-Informed Practices Committee chaired by the Director of Youth Wellness & Trauma-Informed Care, contributing site-level data and updates at monthly meetings (10 meetings/year).

2. Staff Coaching & Referral Coordination

Coach front-line staff on trauma-informed communication and de-escalation techniques through regular check-ins.

Coordinate youth referrals to BGCSENC's network of 510 local mental health agencies and community partners, documenting 100% of referrals in the shared referral log and tracking outcomes to successful connection.

Report referral, coaching, and site-level metrics to the Director for inclusion in the initiative's quarterly progress reports.

3. Training & Certification

Complete the comprehensive trauma-informed care (TIC) training cohort

Work toward BGCA Club Trauma-Informed Specialist certification through the TIP specialization cohort, targeted for completion by Month 9.

Obtain Youth Mental Health First Aid certification within 90 days of hire, or maintain current certification.

4. Youth Programming & Evidence-Informed Curricula

  • Deliver or support BGCA's evidence-informed programming at the assigned site SMART Moves (including Emotional Wellness), SMART Girls, and Passport to Manhood with fidelity to the curricula.
  • Monitor youth safety, belonging, and connection through quarterly surveys and informal check-ins, contributing to National Youth Outcomes Initiative (NYOI) data collection.
  • Support progress toward a 15% increase in program attendance and a 20% reduction in behavior incident reports at the assigned site.

5. Family & Community Engagement

  • Help plan and deliver the four quarterly family engagement workshops at the assigned site, from initial orientation through the year-end celebration and feedback session.
  • Support outreach to grow family participation toward the 1520% engagement target and encourage repeat attendance over time.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local mental health agencies and community partners supporting the site's referral network.

6. Environmental Support

  • Maintain sensory kits, journaling, and art supplies at the assigned site to support a calming, sensory-friendly environment.
  • Help ensure access supports low-cost membership, transportation when available, and daily nutritious meals/snacks are in place to sustain consistent participation of at-risk youth.

7. Data Collection & Reporting

  • Track behavior incident reports, referrals, and family engagement data, and share with the Director on a regular cadence to support quarterly reporting.
  • Assist with administering youth and staff surveys and informal check-ins used in the initiative's evaluation framework.

Additional Responsibilities

Attend required staff meetings, supervision check-ins, and professional development trainings.

Complete all required BGCA and BGCSENC safety trainings.

Participate in the annual staff wellness retreat and ongoing staff-appreciation efforts.

Support organizational events, family engagement activities, and community outreach initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Relationships

Internal: Works closely with the Director of Youth Wellness & Trauma-Informed Care, site leadership, Program staff, and the other Social & Emotional Wellness Coordinator to ensure coordinated implementation of trauma-informed practices.

External: Builds relationships with youth, parents and caregivers, schools, mental health agencies, and community partners supporting youth wellness and trauma-informed care.

Skills/Knowledge Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Youth Development, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience working with youth in a school, clinical, or community setting will be considered.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children or youth in a program, school, clinical, or social-services setting.
  • Working knowledge of, or strong interest in developing, trauma-informed care principles and BGCA's Seven Elements of a Trauma-Informed Club.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with youth, families, and staff, and to model calm, consistent, trauma-informed communication.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to track referrals, attendance, and program data accurately.
  • Comfort coaching or modeling de-escalation techniques for front-line staff.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for local travel between the assigned Club and community partner meetings, as needed.
  • Successful completion of a background check, per BGCA and BGCSENC policy for staff working with youth.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • This is a part-time, site-based role assigned to either the Nixon or Vance Club, approximately 25 hours per week for 48 weeks per year.
  • Some evening and occasional weekend hours are required to support family engagement workshops and youth programming.
  • The Coordinator must actively engage in Club environments alongside youth and staff, including providing de-escalation support as needed.
