Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Food Services

Position Summary:The Food Service Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of food service operations across multiple sites while reporting to the Director of Food Services. Supervision includes ensuring a high standard of operation and service delivery in compliance with all regulatory and funder requirements. The Food Service Supervisor leads a team of food service workers and works collaboratively with other members of the administration to ensure overall effectiveness and efficiency of food service and organizational operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop, coordinate, administer, implement, and evaluate all related food-service programming.
  • Responsible for ensuring all team members meet and comply with all regulatory requirements, including but not limited to the City of Philadelphia required standards of operation, attaining required certifications, and following Health Department and Licenses and Inspections regulations.
  • Responsible for the supervision and preparation of meals, making sure meals are planned, prepared, and served on time and in accordance with health and dietary standards as outlined in funding contracts.
  • Responsible for ensuring all food service meal menus are posted for participant and team member review.
  • Responsible for the assignment of work, monitoring, and evaluation of team members and overall food service performance.
  • Responsible for providing written instruction to food services team members to ensure quality of food preparation.
  • Responsible for technical instruction and training of team members to ensure continuity of food services in the absence of senior team members, to ensure the food service department functions in an orderly manner.
  • Responsible for the overall food service inventory, i.e., food, beverages, food service supplies, etc., including ordering, receiving, pickups, stocking, and monitoring usage.
  • Responsible for the overall cleanliness of the food service area, including cleaning of the kitchen and equipment in accordance with State and local safety and sanitation requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring all food service orders are procured in accordance with organizational guidelines.
  • Responsible for communicating any maintenance issues, equipment failures, inventory shortages, and participant or team member issues to supervisor and/or administration promptly.
  • Responsible for monitoring all activity in food service areas and taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety of food service operations and correcting any problems.
  • Responsible for completing in-service training to meet the requirements for continued professional development of food service team members.
  • Responsible for packaging food for transport and delivery to other organizational programs in accordance with the needs of each program and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for participating in team meetings to ensure overall operations of the food service department. Maintain appropriate documentation of services and prepare reports as directed by the administration, funder’s requirements, agency rules, and procedures.

Education and Qualifications:
  • Culinary degree preferred. High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of one (1) year of cooking experience required.
  • Must possess City of Philadelphia–recognized ServSafe Certification and have familiarity with principles of institutional cooking, portioning, and sampling of foods; food storage/stock rotation procedures; and regulatory health and Licenses and Inspections standards.
  • Familiarity and comfort with diverse communities.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Subject to frequent standing, walking, stair climbing, bending, and lifting (max. 50 lbs.), with gross and fine manual dexterity.
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in heavy traffic and varied weather conditions. Professional efficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Criminal background clearance will be required.

Knowledge & Skills:
  • Must be able to work around extremely hot surfaces such as stoves, steam, and steam tables, as well as cold areas such as walk-in freezers or refrigerators.
  • Must be flexible and able to respond appropriately to emergencies.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, task-driven, and able to work independently and set daily priorities by maintaining a weekly and monthly schedule.
  • Must have a commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance, and be able to work with diverse individuals within the organization and broader community.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Must have a valid driver's license and a clean motor vehicle record.
