The Office of the First Deputy Commissioner oversees critical administrative and operational functions in accordance with the Department's mission. The Office of the First Deputy Commissioner ensures coordination between bureaus and supports the implementation of departmental initiatives, policies and reforms. The Discipline Unit within the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner is responsible for managing and overseeing the internal disciplinary process within the NYPD. The Discipline Unit conducts thorough case reviews of misconduct allegations, and makes recommendations to the Police Commissioner's Office.
The Agency Attorney Ill in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner will help provide legal insight in the comprehensive review and analysis of cases of alleged misconduct for potential disciplinary action.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Reviewing, analyzing, and tracking cases of alleged misconduct
- Collaborating with the Legal Bureau, Internal Affairs Bureau, Department Advocate, and Professional Standards Division
- Preparing and presenting cases to the executive staff in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner
- Providing legal guidance on disciplinary matters.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne .
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
Preferred Skills
- Thorough knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Federal Law, the NYC Administrative Code, and Rules of the City of New York.- Ability to manage a diverse complex, and at times unpredictable workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues. - 3-4 years of criminal law practice or 3-4 years of experience in the New York City administrative discipline system in New York State strongly preferred. - Experience prosecuting / litigating misconduct, public integrity and corruption cases preferred.
