Job description

Animal Care Coordinator Salomon Farm Park (Regular Part-Time)

2129 hours per week | Schedule varies and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays

Do you enjoy working outdoors, caring for animals, and helping others learn about life on a working farm?

Salomon Farm Park is looking for a dependable, hands-on Animal Care Coordinator to help keep our animals healthy, their environments safe, and the farm welcoming for visitors.

What You'll Do

Help provide consistent, compassionate care for the animals at Salomon Farm Park. This is an active, hands-on position that combines animal care, farm maintenance, volunteer coordination, public education, and support for park programs and events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Feed, water, groom, bathe, shear, exercise, train, and provide enrichment for farm animals while monitoring their health, behavior, and overall condition.
  • Clean and maintain animal pens, pastures, shelters, barns, equipment, and surrounding areas while following approved safety, sanitation, and biohazard procedures.
  • Conduct general health checks, maintain accurate animal records, schedule veterinary visits, collect specimens, and assist veterinarians with animal restraint, medications, and vaccinations as assigned.
  • Coordinate, schedule, train, and supervise animal-care volunteers and seasonal staff while ensuring approved care and safety procedures are followed.
  • Assist with fencing, animal structures, pasture rotation, hay production, grounds maintenance, animal programs, park events, rentals, and other farm operations.

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Indiana driver's license.
  • First Aid and Adult/Infant/Child CPR certification.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with volunteers, coworkers, veterinarians, and park visitors.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience caring for livestock or other farm animals.
  • Two years of experience in animal care, agriculture, farming, parks and recreation, or a related field.
  • Experience operating tractors, skid-steers, utility vehicles, farm equipment, hand tools, or power tools.
  • Experience leading or coordinating volunteers.

Physical and Work Requirements

  • This is a physically active position performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and around animals, farm equipment, chemicals, and loud noise. The employee must be able to:
  • Lift up to 75 pounds and carry weight at least 50 feet.
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, push, pull, kneel, crouch, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Safely work around livestock and operate assigned tools, vehicles, and farm equipment.
  • Maintain a neat appearance and follow all City and Parks and Recreation safety requirements.

Why Work at Salomon Farm Park?

This position offers the opportunity to spend your workday outdoors, provide meaningful care for animals, share your knowledge with the community, and help create memorable farm experiences for visitors of all ages.

The City of Fort Wayne is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
