Job Title: Asbestos Investigator

Location: New York, NY

About the role:

BSI is hiring a Consulting Specialist – Industrial Hygiene to support projects across the New York City area, with the majority of work supporting the NYC School Construction Authority and additional clients throughout the region. This is a full-time position with benefits, ideal for someone with a scientific background and hands-on field experience looking to grow in the industrial hygiene space.

This opportunity is perfect for professionals who are ready to hit the ground running and support high-impact environmental health and safety work in a consulting environment.

Must have one of the following:

  • NYCDEP Asbestos Investigator license
  • 1.5 years of asbestos related experience working under NYCDEP and/or NYSDOL regulations

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct industrial hygiene (IH) exposure assessments, including air and noise monitoring, and develop sampling strategies tailored to NYC regulatory requirements
  • Perform hazardous building material surveys in accordance with local and federal guidelines
  • Conduct health and safety inspections in the field (e.g., PPE compliance, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, machine guarding)
  • Support and implement hazard communication and chemical safety programs across client sites
  • Deliver in-person safety and regulatory training programs to clients and contractors as needed
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) management systems
  • Interpret field data and prepare clear, client-ready technical reports using Microsoft Word and related software tools
  • Collaborate with internal project teams and external clients to ensure effective and timely service delivery
  • Perform site visits throughout the New York City metro area
  • Participate in after-hours and weekend work as needed (e.g., pre-construction activities and contractor oversight)
  • Work both independently in the field and on-site

Education/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or related discipline)
  • 2–5 years of experience in the environmental health & safety, industrial hygiene, or related consulting field
  • NYSDOL Asbestos Inspector license
  • USEPA Lead Inspector license
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to create clear technical reports in Microsoft Word; beginner-level Excel skills required
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD preferred
  • Experience working under NYC-specific regulatory frameworks strongly preferred
  • Professional certifications (CIH, CSP, ASP, CHMM, etc.) are a plus
  • Must be willing to travel locally and regionally; personal vehicle is preferred but not required
  • Willingness to support occasional evening or weekend project needs

What we offer:

BSI offers a competitive salary, group-sponsored health and dental, short-term and long-term disability, a company-matched 401k plan, company paid life insurance, 11 paid holidays and 4 weeks paid time off.

The salary for this position can range from $80,500 to $95,000 annually; the advertised salary range reflects the level, scope and responsibilities of the role. Starting salary within that range will be determined based on experience, skills, market considerations and alignment with internal equity principles.
