Job description

Case Manager, Scholar-Athlete Specialist

The Office of Student Outreach and Support is seeking a dedicated, highly organized, collaborative, and student-focused Case Manager, Scholar-Athlete Specialist who brings expertise in collegiate athletics and student support. This individual will join an office of non-clinical Case Managers who provide one-on-one support, coordination, referral, and follow-up services for undergraduate students experiencing significant difficulties related to mental health, physical health and injuries, family emergencies, and other areas of concern. The Case Manager will work to support scholar-athletes as well as other undergraduate students, which requires being able to effectively respond to high-acuity needs and communicate well with a broad range of stakeholders and team members. This individual will lead the office's support of scholar-athletes as SOS's point of contact in Athletics and maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Athletics Department and NCAA guidelines while also serving a wider caseload of Homewood undergraduate students.

Reporting to the Director of Student Outreach & Support and the Associate Athletic Director, Scholar-Athlete Athletics Administration, the case manager will work as part of the Student Outreach & Support team with a dotted-line relationship to Athletics. The case manager maintains high student contact and a caseload of undergraduate students, including scholar-athletes, to address concerns in areas such as physical or mental health, finances, family and interpersonal concerns, and social adjustment that may affect student academic or athletic performance or other aspects of their JHU experience, using a variety of interventions, referrals, coordination, and follow-up services.

The case manager collaborates with offices across campus that also have high contact with students. Responsibilities will include student contact via regular meetings, case management, and collaboration and consultation with colleagues within Athletics, Mental Health Services, Student Financial Support, Student Health and Wellbeing Primary Care, On Campus Living, the greater Division of Student Affairs, University Administration, and Academic Advising and faculty in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering.

While strong, supportive relationships may develop with students, the case manager does not provide any clinical support services to students.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet 1:1 with students experiencing challenges to understand their unique circumstances, identify appropriate next steps, connect to relevant resources, and track their progress towards identified goals.
  • Support scholar-athletes and undergraduate students generally who are injured, hospitalized, or post-surgery and during concussion recovery.
  • Work as the SOS liaison with the Athletics and Recreation departments.
  • Sit on the Homewood CARE Team and Hopkins 360.
  • Document all information and communication in Maxient.
  • Contact and collaborate with other University departments to expedite resolution of problems.
  • Provide referrals to support services within the University and community agencies.
  • Follow up and track prior cases to ensure student compliance with recommendations and adequate staff support for the student.
  • Maintain and monitor factual case records in a variety of electronic student record systems (Maxient, Starfish, Student Information System).
  • Assist in developing and delivering training to students and/or campus partners and consulting with faculty, staff, students, parents, and external stakeholders.
  • Attend office and departmental meetings and training for both Student Outreach and Support and Athletics and support goals/initiatives of both.
  • Develop and distribute appropriate marketing materials.
  • Attend night and weekend scholar-athlete events and other Student Affairs events as needed.
  • Engage with scholar-athlete organizations, such as the scholar-athlete Advisory Committee and others as needed.
  • Other duties that support the office of Student Outreach and Support's role of providing non-clinical case management to undergraduate students and the specific support needs of scholar-athletes.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Team-player who can work with others across disciplines, roles, and functions as well as perform work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, ability to quickly synthesize information from a variety of sources to make informed recommendations in the best interest of individual student needs, and who can adapt to changes in process or policy.
  • Knowledge of current case management trends and literature preferred.
  • Ability to work some evenings/weekends as required for events and programming.
  • Knowledge of privacy guidelines related to educational records and judgment to appropriately communicate difficult/sensitive information with relevant parties.
  • Knowledge and experience providing student support, collaborating across disciplines in a higher education setting, and working to uphold values of diversity and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, social work, public health, or related field.
  • Experience working in non-clinical case management or other student support role within a higher education setting.
  • Experience using Maxient and Starfish.
  • Experience responding/assisting students who present in high levels of distress and connecting them with appropriate resources.
  • Experience working as part of a case management support team and navigating complex, decentralized environments.
  • Experience as a scholar-athlete, or in an athletics setting.
