Job description

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high‑speed trains, metros, monorails and trams to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signaling and digital mobility, we offer our customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full‑time Composite Mechanic in Los Angeles, CA we’re looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your mechanical expertise in a hands‑on, unionized maintenance environment. You’ll work alongside skilled, safety‑driven and collaborative teammates. In this role, you’ll help ensure our locomotives and passenger equipment remain safe, reliable and compliant—directly supporting the daily performance of rail services across Los Angeles.

Day‑to‑day, you’ll work with maintenance, shop and operations teams to diagnose mechanical issues, complete component repairs and carry out FRA‑compliant inspections. You’ll perform troubleshooting on engines, air brake systems, running gear and related equipment, and you’ll keep accurate digital maintenance records in accordance with established procedures.

You’ll specifically take care of inspecting, maintaining and repairing diesel‑powered rail equipment while interpreting mechanical drawings, schematics and service instructions to complete high‑quality repairs.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Delivering accurate, safe mechanical repairs and inspections in compliance with FRA and railroad rules.
  • Diagnosing equipment malfunctions and restoring components to operational condition.
  • Completing digital work orders in the asset‑management system.
  • Assisting with safe movement of locomotives or passenger coaches when required.
  • Supporting a strong safety culture and contributing to continuous improvement.

All about you

We value passion and practical skills. Here are some things that will help you succeed:

  • A high‑school diploma/GED and interest in mechanical or electrical work.
  • Experience or understanding of mechanical maintenance, equipment repair or related technical fields.
  • Knowledge of reading blueprints, mechanical drawings or circuit schematics.
  • Familiarity with basic electrical theory.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal safety instructions.
  • A valid driver’s license with no alcohol/substance‑related moving violations in the past 36 months.
  • Willingness to obtain Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) designation.
  • Basic proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office tools.

Union Conditions & Employment Requirements

  • This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, and union membership is required as a condition of employment.
  • Work hours may include non‑standard schedules, overtime, weekends, holidays and various shifts based on seniority and operational needs.
  • Candidates must meet all safety requirements, including wearing PPE (hard hat, safety‑toe boots, hearing and eye protection).
  • You must pass all required assessments, including skills evaluations applicable under the CBA.
  • You must pass a post‑offer medical exam, including drug and alcohol testing, and remain subject to random testing per certification requirements.
  • Active employees must complete the required time‑in‑position requirement before being eligible to bid on another role, per the CBA.
  • Physical requirements include:
  • Lifting up to 70 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tight spaces
  • Walking long distances over uneven terrain
  • Adequate hearing and vision for safety‑critical work
  • Exposure to heat, noise and heavy‑equipment environments

Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life‑long transformative journey—the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, hands‑on challenges and meaningful work that keeps rail operations moving.
  • Collaborate with supportive teammates across functions.
  • Contribute to innovative solutions in a vital transportation sector.
  • Experience an inclusive, safety‑focused environment.
  • Access award‑winning learning and development programs.
  • Build a long‑term career path across functions and locations.
  • Benefit from a fair and competitive compensation package aligned with the collective bargaining agreement.

Hourly Rate: $ (per applicable CBA wage schedule).

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive here—but we’re confident that when you see the equipment you’ve worked on out in service, you’ll feel proud. If you’re ready for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!

As a global business, we’re an equal‑opportunity employer that celebrates diversity across the 63 countries we operate in. We’re committed to creating an inclusive workplace for everyone.
