    Organizational Purpose

    The Division of Brand Inspections primary responsibility is to protect the livestock industry from loss by theft illegal butchering or straying of livestock. Colorado brand inspectors are charged with inspecting and verifying ownership on all cattle and horses in Colorado that change ownership are transported over 75 miles within the state transported out of the state or transported to slaughter.

    Major Objectives of the Position

    Position will physically brand inspect livestock and alternative livestock offered for sale transport or slaughter prior to shipment or change of ownership to ensure valid legal title. The position will implement proper use care and maintenance of the state assigned vehicle and other division property in the district and schedule inspection appointments to guarantee most efficient time management for the best possible service to the area. Position audits proof of ownership documents or legal contracts to certify legal title or possession of livestock and takes control of questionable ownership livestock as mandated by Colorado statute. Position issues inspection certificates and compiles permanent records of inspection activities to confirm and document statutory compliance. Position is responsible for the district permanent record and affirms and verifies market and slaughter plant compliance to State regulation within jurisdiction. Position computes and reconciles inspection fees minimum charges horse permit fees beef board fees horse board fees and mileage costs. Position investigates stray livestock to certify legal owner and proper compliance with statute concerning the sale and reconciliation of all proceeds and expenses as they relate to strays. Position applies applicable board rule and policy utilizes type III police power and assists in brand prosecution cases; collaborates on investigations with local law enforcement or District Attorney and in some instances arrests suspects and initiates livestock stops on public roads.

    Primary Duties

    Inspections-Country Livestock Market & Alternative Livestock :

  • Physically brand inspect livestock and alternative livestock offered for sale transport or slaughter prior to shipment or change of ownership to ensure valid legal title.
  • Implement proper use care and maintenance of the state assigned vehicle and other division property in the district.
  • Schedule inspection appointments to guarantee most efficient time management for the best possible service to the area.
  • Audits proof of ownership documents or legal contracts to certify legal title or possession of livestock.
  • Position may take control of questionable ownership livestock as mandated by Colorado statute upon direction from the immediate supervisor.
  • Issues inspection certificates and compiles permanent record of inspection activities to confirm and document statutory compliance.
  • Is responsible for the district permanent record and affirms and verifies market and slaughter plant compliance to State regulation within jurisdiction as directed from the immediate supervisor.
  • Position computes and reconciles inspection fees minimum charges horse permit fees beef board fees horse board fees and mileage costs.
  • State Equipment Forms & Time Management :

  • Maintain a state bank account for deposit of all inspection beef council and horse board fees and keep accurate records that track all deposits withdrawals and interest payments.
  • Send the monthly bank statement deposit slips and check to the Brand Office by the 15th of the following month and make a minimum of one deposit per week of fees collected.
  • Remit inspection fees from this account to the Brand Office with their monthly inspection reports.
  • Complete multiple forms and turn them in monthly including but not limited to : certificates and permits completed foreach day of the month; dock cards; balance sheets etc.
  • Vehicle provided must be kept in good repair and appearance and have the oil changed on the vehicle at manufacturer recommended mileage intervals.
  • Estray Livestock - Missing & Stolen Livestock :

  • Assists in investigation of estray livestock to certify legal owner and proper compliance with statute concerning the sale and reconciliation of all proceeds and expenses as they relate to strays as directed in the Brand Inspector manual.
  • Position should immediately notify the Brand Commissioner if the livestock are suspected to be stolen. Position may also advise the caller to contact the local Sheriffs office to file a theft report.
  • Position may need to assist the Sheriffs office in any investigation upon approval from the Brand Commissioner.
  • The inspector should advise the caller that if the missing or stolen livestock are recovered to notify the inspector immediately.
  • Enforcement

    Position may be asked to make road stops in accordance with Brands Division procedures.

    Determine the origin and destination of livestock and examines the ownership and health documents on animals being transported.

    Verify that the markings and brands on the animals in the trailer match the documents presented.

    May ask for assistance from the State Patrol if there are any problems with the vehicle registrations or the drivers license for the driver of the vehicle.

    May issue a violation warning or a summons and complaint notice to anyone who has violated the brand inspection laws as per Colorado Revised Statutes.

  • Two (2) years of full-time experience working with cattle. Part-time work will be pro-rated.

    Lived Experience Qualification :

  • Experience working with cattle that is voluntary or on your own family ranch :

  • Must have and maintain a valid CO Drivers License.

  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including the ability to move with agility dexterity and speed around livestock and the ability to rapidly climb gates or fences.
  • Must be able to work inside and outside as needed in inclement weather.
  • Required Competencies :
