Job Summary
Starting wage is $50.39 / hour. Starting wage is 90% of base wage until completion of probation.
This position is primarily responsible for performing maintenance and repair on the Port's railroad system, which includes the day-to-day maintenance, repairs, inspections and rebuilds. Other duties include routine building and grounds maintenance.
Essential Functions
- Performing inspections of the track, track bed, and track right-of-way and report safety concerns, defects, and other problems.
- Removing and replacing railroad ties, pulling and driving spikes, shoveling rock ballast, loading and unloading equipment and material.
- Maintenance and repair of railroad track systems, using hand tools and power equipment.
- Grading roadways using heavy equipment.
- Construction and repair of asphalt surfaces.
- Performs grounds maintenance including landscaping with rock, timbers, plants, and automatic sprinkler controls; planting, care, and pruning of all type of trees and shrubs; planting, fertilizing, watering, and mowing of lawns; weeding, application, and spraying of herbicide and pesticide to assist the control of various plants, insects, snails, and diseases. May be performed on rail tracks.
- Moves concrete barriers, ecology blocks, and jersey barriers using a variety of large equipment.
- Works in a supporting role with Journey Level personnel in the areas of carpentry, HVAC, painting, electrical, and plumbing.
- Enters work order data on computers and on handwritten work orders.
- Assists with estimates for labor and materials and researching parts.
- Operates a variety of equipment and hand tools including, but not limited to : spike maul, sledge hammer, air / gas powered wrenches, jack hammer, rail drill, portable abrasive rail saws, electric arc welder, oxy acetylene torch, lawn equipment, pickup truck, dump truck, forklift, rail operated tie tamper, rail operated ballast regulator, backhoe, loader, dozer, roller, excavator, other general maintenance tools, computer, telephone, cell phone, and hand held two-way radio.
