Primary Purpose

To provide instruction in the Natural Resources Department (Forest Resources Technology Program) as a member of an instructional team as needed. Instruction is for students in an Associate of Applied Science degree program. The position involves teaching, directing student discussions, selecting and conducting laboratory learning experiences appropriate for meeting objectives, and evaluating student performance in the classroom and laboratory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide instruction in Forestry-related areas which may include, but not be limited to the following : wildlife identification (FW 212 or FW 218, Survey of Northwest Birds, and Mammals), soils ( FOR 208 – Soils : Sustainable Ecosystems), forest navigation ( FOR 230A Map, Compass, GPS ), introduction to forestry ( FOR 111 – Forestry Perspectives), forest protection ( FOR 272 – Forest Entomology and Pathology), chainsaw use ( FOR 130 – Chainsaw Use and Maintenance). This includes lecturing, directing and supervising student laboratory practices, and providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Classroom teaching may require 4-8 load units (4-8 contact hours per week) per term, involving 10-40 students per class.

Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and / or evening classes taught on or off campus. Includes shared responsibility for curriculum development and participation in evaluation for courses and the program.

Cooperate with other College personnel to assist students with career planning, job placement, and follow-up studies.

Act as a resource person for students.

Cooperate with the NICR Department efforts to revise and standardize curricula for classes.

Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department or College.

Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, as assigned.

Teaching requires maintaining one office hour per course, per week.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. Knowledge and / or work experience in one of the areas detailed in #1 under Essential Job functions.

Knowledge of teaching and instruction to various audiences and group dynamics.

Visual ability, corrected, to observe, direct, and supervise students in laboratory situations.

Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer controlled mixed media presentations.

Ability to operate and oversee the operation of computers.

Ability to effectively communicate orally with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.

Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and / or professional literature.

Ability to work with forestry faculty and other COCC staff at all levels.

Willingness to travel and / or teach at various hours and locations, as required.

Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

Ergonomic Requirements

Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Ability to work in outdoor settings, including walking up to 2 miles, standing for extended periods, and carrying and operating equipment up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements for Transfer Course :

Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Wildlife, Fisheries, Biology, Natural Resources, Rangeland Resources or related field.

A minimum of 12 months (cumulative) field experience in some area of natural resources
