Job description

Medicolegal Investigator IV Positions

The Department of the Medical Examiner is seeking experienced death or forensic investigators to fill a couple of Medicolegal Investigator IV positions in Honolulu. These positions serve as a working supervisor for a team of investigative staff and related activities for an assigned shift on selected weekdays and/or weekend days, assuming responsibility for the full range of medicolegal investigative work in connection with any death that falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Medical Examiner.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and supervise medicolegal investigators by assigning work, reviewing reports, providing training, and ensuring quality investigations.
  • Conduct comprehensive investigations of sudden, unexpected, suspicious, violent, and unattended deaths to assist in determining the cause and manner of death.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement, forensic pathologists, hospitals, mortuaries, and other local, state, federal, and military agencies throughout the investigation process.
  • Manage the identification, notification of next of kin, release and disposition of decedents, and the security and documentation of evidence and personal property.
  • Prepare detailed investigative reports, maintain accurate case records, testify in court when required, and assist with policy development, operational planning, and other supervisory responsibilities.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Provides 24-hour coverage and may be required to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency call-outs.
  • Works in environments that may involve exposure to contagious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and hazardous chemicals while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Regularly encounters deceased individuals in various stages of decomposition and may be exposed to unpleasant odors, insects, and other conditions associated with medicolegal investigations.
  • Responds to death scenes in a variety of locations, including homes, hospitals, highways, industrial sites, fire scenes, and remote or difficult-to-access terrain, where hazardous conditions may exist.
  • Performs physically demanding work, including prolonged standing, walking over uneven terrain, climbing, bending, and lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds.
