ShareThe Court Liaison is responsible for the oversight of court related procedures for patients requiring involuntary treatment of mental health and substance abuse. This position is a vital link between the county courts, the attorneys, and the Physicians that are part of the patients’ treatment. The Court Liaison is responsible for mental health filings, sending and receiving notifications to and from the courts, as well as monitoring the legal hold expiration dates for any patient who is on an Order of Protective Custody or Commitment. The Court Liaison is responsible for arranging and attending any mental health court hearings alongside the patients. The Court Liaison provides imperative communications between our mental and behavioral health service providers and the courts during the life of their mental health cases and the patient’s admission.
Essential Functions:
- Ensures all legal, involuntary warrant and non-warrant holds are within the state mental health code timeframes, and that the proper documentation is present on the legal hold paperwork.
- Prepares and ensures that all court documentation is accurate and meets all court, county, and state mental health code deadlines and regulations.
- Works closely with hospital physicians to ensure proper documentation and completes legal probable cause and commitment hold filings.
- Appears alongside the patient at probable cause and commitment hearings to provide clinical information on behalf of the hospital.
- Communicates information frequently with the patients regarding their involuntary hold process and status, per states mental health codes.
- Fosters a relationship between the county court systems, attorneys, physicians, and the hospital.
- Conducts assessments and is adept at providing program and treatment recommendations that align with the state’s mental health codes.
- Obtain and maintain notary public designation to ensure legal paperwork has been certified as needed.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
Educational / Experience Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- One year experience in behavioral health.
- Prior inpatient court practices training, and mental health commitment experience preferred.
Qualifications / Skills:
- Strong communication skills to develop and grow relationships with the county court systems and other related agencies.
- Ability to meet daily, imperative legal deadlines.
- Strong organization skills are needed to ensure all things are done in an urgent and timely manner.
- Proficiency with Office products and Oceans software platforms.
- Skills such as presentation, punctuality, and professionalism.
- Notary Public and knowledge of state’s mental health codes.
- Strong connections and communication with the clinical staff and hospital providers.
- Understanding of proper documentation on non-warrant and judge or magistrate signed warrant legal hold paperwork.
- Understanding of legal Guardianship documents and power of attorney documents.
Work Environment:
Subject to many interruptions. Daily pressure due to multiple calls, time constraint, and inquiries. This position can be high paced and stressful; must be able to cope mentally and physically to atmosphere. Work requires spending approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building that offers protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
