The Department of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Engineering, beginning September 1, 2026.
We seek dynamic and innovative candidates with a strong research record in quantum information science and engineering (QISE) who can build and sustain a nationally recognized, externally funded applied research program. While applications over a wide range of specialties in QISE are encouraged, the successful candidate will enhance or strategically complement ongoing efforts within the Engineering department, Department of Physics, and Data & Quantum Science Center at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Preference will be given to applications focusing on work in the areas of superconducting quantum computing, quantum information processing, quantum electronic devices and systems, quantum sensing, quantum control, quantum materials, atomic and molecular quantum systems, and quantum nano- and optomechanics.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level and contribute to developing new courses in their area of expertise. The department currently offers Electrical and Computer Engineering programs and participates in college-wide interdisciplinary graduate programs.
Successful candidates will have experience in and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate courses and a desire to contribute to the growth of a strong Engineering Department. A completed Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field at the time of hiring is required. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, potential for external funding, commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and graduate mentoring, and enthusiasm for contributing to the growth of a vibrant and inclusive Engineering Department.
Application instructions :
Applicants should upload a cover letter, comprehensive curriculum vitae, statements of research objectives and teaching philosophy, as well as the names of at least three references with contact information online at (THIS LINK WILL BE UPDATED).
Review of applications will begin January 1, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.
UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who engage the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.
UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $80,000 and $105,000 for this position.
The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment. Exceptional candidates may be considered for salaries above the published range to ensure competitiveness within the academic market.
UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact HR@umb.edu or 617-287-5150.
