Job description

Safety Manager - Concrete

Note: A CHST is required for this position.

The Safety Manager - Concrete serves as an embedded safety leader within Pankow's self-perform concrete operations. This role partners directly with Concrete Operations leadership, Superintendents, and craft professionals to strengthen planning, improve execution, and advance Pankow's Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) culture.

This position supports multiple concurrent concrete projects including buildings, parking structures, elevated decks, slabs-on-grade, foundations, and structural frames with a primary focus on Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention, proactive risk/injury management, and continuous operational improvement.

The Safety Manager functions as a field-based facilitator and trusted operational partner, integrating safety into production planning rather than operating solely as a compliance resource.

JOB SCOPE & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Accountabilities

OPERATIONAL PARTNERSHIP & FIELD LEADERSHIP

  • Serve as the dedicated safety partner to Pankow Concrete project teams.
  • Participate in preconstruction meetings, pull planning sessions, and lookahead planning processes.
  • Strengthen Pre-Task Planning (PTP) and Project Risk Profile (PRP) development.
  • Provide oversight during high-risk concrete activities including formwork, PT decks, crane and rigging operations, excavation, and silica control.

SERIOUS INJURY & FATALITY (SIF) PREVENTION

  • Identify and manage high-energy exposures aligned with the 8 Lethal Hazards.
  • Conduct focused risk reviews for critical lifts and complex sequencing operations.
  • Collaborate with field leadership to design practical and effective risk controls.

HOP CULTURE & LEARNING LEADERSHIP

  • Apply and reinforce Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
  • Facilitate Learning Teams following incidents and high-potential events.
  • Promote safe reporting and systems-based problem solving.

PLANNING & RISK ANTICIPATION

  • Review drawings and sequencing plans to proactively identify hazards.
  • Analyze leading indicators and incident trends to inform project planning.
  • Strengthen task-level hazard analysis and check-and-adjust processes.

INCIDENT MANAGEMENT & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

  • Lead post-incident learning teams to drive continuous improvement in safety culture and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Serve as subject matter expert in fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, cranes & rigging, and silica standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred; or equivalent experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • CHST, ASP, or CSP required (or ability to obtain within defined timeframe).
  • Competent Person certifications in fall protection, excavation, scaffolding, silica, or related areas.
  • HOP training or demonstrated experience applying HOP principles preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of safety-related experience.
  • 3+ years supporting concrete or heavy civil construction operations.
  • Experience overseeing safety across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated success improving safety performance and reducing recordable incidents preferred.
