About the Program

Andover Bread Loaf (ABL) reimagines education based on a pedagogy of care that, through writing and the arts, ignites change in youth, adults, and educators by providing the space, trust, and freedom for them to develop their intellectual, leadership, and collaborative skills. Using these tools, they can transform themselves and their communities while working toward social justice.

LSWW is a summer three-week intensive writing and arts program for students in grades 8-12, hosted at Phillips Academy. Student programming is held daily Monday through Friday from 9 am to 2 pm.

About the Role

During the Lawrence Student Writers Workshop, a WLs number one job is to supervise students and foster writing. ABL Writing Leaders (WLs) will work under the guidance of LSWW directors and their fellow WLs to inspire summer participants to love writing and to use it as a form of self-expression and transformation. WLs serve as literary role models that create, staff, and lead workshops and daily activities and programming. WLs must arrive on time, prepared, and present for the entirety of the day, every day, for our 14-day program from 8 : 30 am - 3 : 00 pm.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Have completed the Writing Leader Training Program, past LSWW participant, or been a student in 501WT Write to Change course.
  • A commitment to culturally responsive practices and a demonstrated ability to incorporate and engage diverse perspectives across all aspects of the work.
  • Create and lead writing workshops for both big and small groups.
  • Self-starter who can work both independently and collaboratively and brings forth an asset-based approach to programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Passionate about creative writing and working with young writers from a variety of backgrounds, especially youth in grades 8-12.
  • Possess a flexible and adaptable attitude with an understanding, concern for wellbeing, and enjoyment of young people.
  • Build positive and healthy relationships with participants by helping them adjust to new situations, give encouragement, and model ABL values.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with directors, other WLs, and campus staff.
  • Support and cultivate an inspirational and positive environment that engages participants and creates robust and vibrant opportunities to foster expression.
  • Perform various duties while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Responsibilities and Duties

  • Model ABL values to our young writers while cultivating their confidence in - and love for - writing; listen, share, guide, and advise participants and create opportunities for them to develop their creative writing and thinking skills.
  • Co-create and lead workshops with fellow WLs each day for a group of eight to ten participants. During group time, WLs will lead writing games and prompts, spend meaningful one-on-one time conferencing with each writer and provide feedback and encouragement, and facilitate community building.
  • Provide typing, editorial, and moral support to our writers during the anthology process.
  • Create and lead one elective activity, which ranges from art, sports, dance, filmmaking, and more!
  • Exercise mature and professional judgment in assuming responsibility for and working with youth and discernment in reporting any concerns to directors.
  • Attend and complete both orientation dates; topics include mandated reporting, SafeSchools training, WL manual and policies, and campus safety training.
  • Ability to execute assigned tasks and duties that maintain program objectives, routines, and schedule.
  • Responsible for supervising and taking attendance of students while implementing the daily schedule.
  • Attend daily staff meetings to communicate needs and concerns, sign up for supporting roles, and provide program feedback.
