Job description

Job Estimator

The Job Estimator will provide necessary information as it relates to approximate costs, materials, time for completion, and manpower necessary for specific projects or customer requirements. Will work with Project Managers, Sales, and support personnel for accurate scope-of-work information and with Superintendents or Foremen to identify and account for available labor concerns, job hazard analyses, or work delay considerations. The Job Estimator will support estimating teams and operation staff with quotes, booked jobs, and pending and on-going project support. Estimating activities may include field operations work, mid-to-heavy labor work (such as concrete), or unique customer requests.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accurately predict the cost of projects through early involvement with quote requests, understanding project documents, interpretation of job requirements, and knowledge of the scope-of-work needed.
  • Utilize existing resources and information available to determine required procedures, methods, and equipment necessary for the safe completion of each project or job.
  • Coordinate with estimators, sales, and project personnel to review job & equipment options to determine the best solutions.
  • Receive quotes or bids for equipment rentals needed, review vendors and suppliers for availability, and may coordinate delivery of external materials necessary to complete each job.
  • Compose project plans that include field-work plans, crane-lift or specialty equipment plans, job hazard analyses, and outlines environmental factors or potential work delays.
  • Completes reports, summaries, portal or website updates (if required), and data entry activities to company-specific software and estimating and planning software; submits monthly KPI reports, and timely job cost spreadsheets; prepare purchase orders and necessary paperwork.
  • Complete customer prequalification requests, provide written quote estimates and job costing / invoicing reports, and provide reports to customers, as necessary.
  • Assist management in decision-making encourages the optimization of costs, labor, and equipment.
  • Perform regular and predictable work and perform work during scheduled and/or agreed upon times. Limited, local travel may be necessary.
  • Complete all other duties as necessary or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):

  • High School diploma or equivalent necessary.
  • Intermediate understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and working with a Windows-based computer system.
  • Two (2) years' estimating experience preferred (construction or job costing experience highly desired).
  • Knowledge of industry terminology, tools/equipment, and related software knowledge helpful.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical information, schematics, drawing specifications, and use tools such as calipers, tape measures, load bearing and rating specifiers, and various hand tools.
  • Understands and uses mathematical concepts, including multiplication, division, fractions, geometry, and some engineering concepts as applicable.
  • Excellent time-management skills; can work under time-constraints and deadlines; is self-directed and self-motivated, prioritizes tasks, and is detail-oriented.
  • Can think critically and approach problem-solving with an analytical mindset.
  • Takes initiative; demonstrates a positive demeanor and has a customer service mindset.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal); can disseminate and present technical information to all levels of staff and all levels of understanding.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Normal, climate-controlled office setting. Extended periods of sitting and using senses involving sight, touch, and auditory. Will use computer keyboard, mouse, cellular phone, and general office equipment. Frequent walking and exposure to inclement weather or uneven terrain to assess scope-of-work or job site. May require infrequent climbing, crouching, or activities associated with physical inspection of equipment and tools.
