Dean Of Students (Secondary Schools)
The role of Dean is to assist administration in providing leadership in school-wide planning, increasing student achievement, implementing effective teaching strategies, and maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment.
Essential duties and responsibilities include: assisting the principal in the overall administration and operation of the school, promoting and maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment, administering and enforcing district and school policies, procedures, and student conduct expectations, investigating student disciplinary incidents, utilizing restorative practices to address student behavior concerns, maintaining accurate discipline records, analyzing discipline data to develop strategies to improve student behavior, monitoring student attendance, collaborating with counselors, social workers, teachers, and families to address barriers impacting student success, participating in student support processes, developing and implementing intervention plans for students experiencing academic, behavioral, attendance, or social-emotional challenges, building positive relationships with students, serving as a visible presence throughout the school, supporting the development and implementation of programs and initiatives that promote positive school culture, student engagement, and belonging, facilitating student conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative conversations, communicating regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, behavior, attendance, and intervention plans, participating in parent conferences and meetings involving student support and discipline matters, collaborating with community agencies and organizations to connect students and families with available resources and services, assisting with school safety planning, emergency preparedness, and crisis response procedures, working collaboratively with school security personnel and district safety staff to maintain a secure school environment, supervising student activities, athletic events, and other school-sponsored functions, assisting with the implementation of school improvement goals and district initiatives, supervising assigned certified and classified staff members, conducting formal and informal evaluations of certified and classified staff, providing coaching, feedback, and professional growth opportunities to assigned staff members, supporting the recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and retention of staff, participating as an active member of the school leadership team and contributing to building-level decision-making, analyzing student, staff, and school performance data to support continuous improvement efforts, supporting implementation of school attendance initiatives, dropout prevention efforts, and student re-engagement strategies, assisting with the development, implementation, and monitoring of student behavior support systems and intervention programs, maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound professional judgment in all matters, attending professional development activities and remaining current on educational best practices, school leadership, student services, and applicable laws and regulations, exhibiting regular and timely attendance, performing other duties as prescribed by the Building Principal.
