Overview
The Dialysis RN provides specialized care to patients with chronic kidney disease or acute renal failure requiring dialysis treatment. This role involves technical expertise with dialysis equipment, continuous monitoring, patient education, and close collaboration with nephrologists.
Key Responsibilities Treatment Preparation & Initiation
Assess patients upon arrival : vitals, weight, symptoms, access status
Prepare and prime dialysis machines
Cannulate fistulas or grafts; access central lines safely
Initiate dialysis and adjust settings per nephrologist orders
Monitoring & Intervention
Monitor patients throughout therapy for hypotension, cramping, arrhythmias, and other complications
Titrate ultrafiltration rates based on real-time patient status
Respond to emergencies and abnormal lab findings
Discontinue treatment and ensure safe hemostasis of access sites
Collaboration
Communicate changes to nephrologists
Work with dialysis technicians, dietitians, social workers, and transplant teams
Support interdisciplinary care plans
Documentation & Compliance
Document all aspects of treatment
Follow dialysis safety standards (CDC, CMS, facility protocols)
Maintain equipment, infection control, and sanitation standards
Education & Support
Teach patients about renal diet, fluid restrictions, and medication adherence
Provide education about vascular access care
Support patients coping with chronic illness
