Location : St Joseph Medical Center- Kansas City, MO

TheNurse Externin the Emergency Department provides basic patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. This role is designed for nursing students who have completed foundational clinical coursework and are seeking hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity environment. The Nurse Extern supports nursing staff while developing clinical judgment, technical skills, and familiarity with emergency care workflows.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to) :

Assist RNs with patient care activities including vital signs, patient transport, hygiene, and comfort measures.

Perform clinical skills within scope (e.g., glucometer checks, EKGs, specimen collection, splinting, documentation assistance).

Support the ED team during triage, trauma alerts, and rapid medical interventions as appropriate to training.

Observe and learn assessment techniques, emergency procedures, and medical decision-making under RN supervision.

Demonstrate initiative in learning opportunities, competency development, and professional behavior.

Qualifications

Before we go any further, we do have some deal-breakers. You must have :

Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program.

Must be in good and academic standing.

Current Basic Life Support Certification.

Certified Nursing Assistant preferred.
