Headquartered in Lowell, Massachusetts, MACOM has design centers and sales offices throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. MACOM is certified to the ISO9001 international quality standard and ISO14001 environmental management standard.

MACOM has more than 75 years of application expertise with multiple design centers, Si, GaAs, and InP fabrication, manufacturing, assembly and test, and operational facilities throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition, MACOM offers foundry services that represents a key core competency within our business.

MACOM sells and distributes products globally via a sales channel comprised of a direct field sales force, authorized sales representatives, and leading industry distributors. Our sales team is trained across all of our products to give our customers insights into our entire portfolio.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly capable Engineering Lab Manager to oversee our hardware lab operations, maintain advanced RF and electronic test equipment, and support the development of cutting-edge systems. This role blends hands-on lab management with technical depth in RF measurements, coding/automation, and modern AI-enabled workflows. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable troubleshooting circuits, managing technicians, and improving lab productivity through software and intelligent tooling.

Key Responsibilities

Lab Operations & Equipment Management

  • Own day-to-day operation of the engineering lab, ensuring readiness, safety, and efficiency
  • Manage, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot RF and electronic test equipment (e.g., VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes)
  • Develop and enforce lab processes, documentation, and best practices
  • Track equipment inventory, utilization, and lifecycle planning
  • Interface with vendors for procurement, calibration, and repairs

RF Measurement & Technical Support

  • Support engineers in performing RF measurements including S-parameters, power measurements, and load-pull
  • Assist in test setup design, debugging, and validation of RF systems
  • Ensure measurement repeatability, accuracy, and proper lab methodologies
  • Troubleshoot complex hardware issues across PCB, system, and test setups

Automation, Software & Data Systems

  • Develop scripts and tools (Python, MATLAB, or similar) to automate test workflows and data collection
  • Build and maintain lab data pipelines, dashboards, and reporting tools
  • Integrate instruments using SCPI, APIs, or custom interfaces
  • Drive improvements in lab efficiency through software and automation

AI Enablement & Innovation

  • Identify opportunities to apply AI/ML tools to lab workflows (e.g., automated analysis, anomaly detection, test optimization)
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to incorporate AI-assisted development and debugging tools
  • Stay current with emerging AI technologies relevant to hardware engineering and lab environments
  • Promote smart data practices that enable future AI applications

Team Leadership & Technician Management

  • Lead and mentor lab technicians building, assembling, and modifying circuits and test setups
  • Plan and prioritize technician workloads to align with engineering timelines
  • Ensure high standards of workmanship, documentation, and quality control
  • Foster a collaborative, safety-first, and continuous improvement culture

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in hardware lab environments, preferably with RF systems
  • Strong hands-on experience with RF test and measurement equipment
  • Experience supporting PCB bring-up, debugging, and circuit validation
  • Proficiency in programming (Python preferred) for automation and data analysis
  • Experience managing or leading technicians or lab personnel

Preferred Key Skills

  • RF measurement expertise
  • Lab operations and equipment lifecycle management
  • Coding and automation mindset
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging ability
  • Leadership and team coordination
  • Continuous improvement and innovation focus
  • Curiosity and openness to AI-driven tools
  • Deep understanding of RF principles and measurement techniques
  • Experience interfacing with lab instruments programmatically (SCPI, VISA, etc.)
  • Familiarity with data analysis, visualization tools, and test infrastructure
  • Exposure to AI/ML tools, scripting assistants, or data-driven workflows
  • Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, or lab-as-code concepts
