Description
Vacancy is in the Environmental Health Division of the Health and Human Services Department. Posting will remain open until sufficient applications are received .Under general supervision, performs technical public health work in the education and enforcement of public health laws and regulations relating to environmental health, housing, and property maintenance. Participates in routine inspections and regulation activities of general environmental sanitation. Conducts environmental related investigations of public health activities. Investigates environmental and nuisance complaints and takes appropriate action as needed. Inspects food service establishments, dwellings and other buildings for sanitation and safety hazards in accordance with state and local laws / ordinances, licensing regulations and codes, and under state or local public health codes. Issues citations, and municipal notices of violation as needed. Assists in the preparation of division related projects and other public health-related educational initiatives. Maintains statistical records of all program activities and prepares reports and correspondence. Performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics :
Incumbents are required to independently perform the full ranges of duties. Work may be performed in emergency situtations, requiring the ability to multi-task and respond to situations promptly, professionally, and accurately. May assist in the training of the Environmental Health Sanitarian Trainee.
This is a CHPEA union position. The hours of work for this position are 40 per week.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination will be designed to measure : Knowledge of :
- Sanitary sciences, including bacteriology, biology, chemistry, and personal hygiene;
- Modern methods, principles and practices of public health sanitation;
- Principals and practice of housing code enforcement;
- Laws, ordinances and regulations governing environmental health;
- Principals and practice of public and environmental health;
- Public and environmental health terminology;
- Techniques of collecting and analyzing data.

Qualifications
Open to all applicants who meet the following qualifications :
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health, environmental health, biological sciences, sanitary engineering or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in the field of environmental health.Master's degree from an accredited college or university public health, environmental health, or closely related field preferred.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.Must obtain certification as a Connecticut Registered Sanitarian within twenty-four (24) months,
Must possess and maintain Food Establishment Inspector Certification from the State of Connecticut.
Must possess and maintain Lead Inspector Certification from the State of Connecticut.
Must possess and maintain Phase I Subsurface Sewage Disposal Certification from the State of Connecticut.Must obtain Pool Certificate from the State of Connecticut within six (6) months.
May be required to obtain additional certification as a result of legislative requirements.
