This position is an in-house only job posting. You must currently be employed by the Logan City Fire Department to apply for this position.
The Logan City Fire Department hereby announces a promotional examination for the purpose of establishing a hiring roster of eligible candidates for the position of Battalion Chief.
Testing will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Wednesday, March 25, 2026, and Thursday, March 26, 2026. (Based on the number of candidates, the test may be completed in two days).
Qualifications :
- Two years of service as a Captain or Captain Paramedic with the LCFD to be eligible to test.
- Four years of service as a Captain or Captain Paramedic with the LCFD during the two-year life of the test in order to promote.
- Ten years of progressively responsible fire service or related job experience.
- Have a history of positive performance evaluations.
- Officer Development Program (ODP) certification.
- Fire Officer I certification.
- Firefighter II certification.
- Apparatus Driver Operator (ADO) certification.
- State of Utah Driver's License.
- AEMT or Paramedic certification.
Desirable qualifications and certifications include Haz-Mat Technician, Technical Rescue Technician, Paramedic Certification, Fire Officer II, and Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Management, or related area.
Any equivalent combination of education, knowledge, and / or experience may be considered as qualifications for this position. TrackIt evaluations may be used to determine job performance history.
Compensation : All City employees are paid within a salary range based on a statewide market study. Annual merit increases are based upon personal performance and progress on goals established by the employees, immediate supervisor, and Human Resource Department, as funds are appropriated by the Municipal Council.

Examination : The examination process will be divided into three phases over a three-day period, scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, Wednesday March 25, and Thursday March 26, 2026. (Based on the number of candidates the test may be completed in two days.) Any applicant with a final score below 70% will be removed from the promotional list. (Combination of all four components of the testing process)
Written Exam Based on the Officer Development Program and LCFD Policies, Logan City Policies, MSEs, and MTEs. This section of the promotional examination process will be rated to a maximum of 25% of the composite score.
Practical Exam Based upon an Incident Command Scenario. This section of the promotional examination process will be rated to a maximum of 30% of the composite score.
Oral Exam This section of the promotional examination process will be rated to a maximum of 25% of the composite score.
Applicants will be given additional points based on resume review and prior history. This section of the promotional examination process will be rated to a maximum of 20% of the composite score.
Candidates are responsible to ensure that all information is provided to the City for assessment. Copies of certifications and diplomas are required in order to receive credit. Credit will not be given without proof or verification. If certifications are pending, please provide a letter of verification that the certification is pending.
