Job description

Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Design Engineer to develop safe, efficient structural designs for custom low-rise pre-engineered metal building systems used in industrial applications. The role is responsible for structural framing design, evaluating non-standard conditions, supporting proposal engineering, interpreting client specifications, and coordinating technical requirements throughout the project lifecycle. Projects may include crane-supported structures, building modifications, multi-structure connections, specialty openings, equipment-support features, and retrofits.

The ideal candidate has a Civil or Structural Engineering background, has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and brings experience designing pre-engineered metal buildings. Direct experience with MBS is strongly preferred, although comparable metal-building design software may be considered where the underlying PEMB engineering experience is strong. The client is especially interested in an engineer who is progressing toward PE licensure and wants broader exposure to technically varied industrial building projects.

Why Join Our Client?

Our client is an established provider of engineered metal building systems serving industrial and infrastructure-focused customers. The company handles technically customized projects that go beyond conventional commercial metal buildings, with applications spanning energy, manufacturing, power generation, data infrastructure, and other industrial environments. Its integrated model brings engineering, drafting, project management, material supply, and field execution together under one organization.

This position offers engineers the opportunity to work on specialized structural challenges rather than repetitive standard-building designs. Engineers gain exposure to custom loading conditions, equipment integration, building modifications, specialty systems, and client-specific requirements while seeing how engineering decisions affect estimating, procurement, construction, and final project execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop structural designs for low-rise pre-engineered metal building systems, including standard and non-standard framing conditions.
  • Evaluate project-specific structural requirements involving cranes, specialty openings, building tie-ins, retrofits, supports, and other customized conditions.
  • Apply metal-building design software to analyze framing systems and develop efficient engineering solutions.
  • Review customer specifications and preliminary project information to define structural scope and support accurate proposal development.
  • Perform preliminary engineering during the estimating and proposal phase, including structural evaluation, scope clarification, and technical qualification.
  • Coordinate with clients and internal project teams to resolve technical questions, document design decisions, and maintain alignment throughout project execution.
  • Support the improvement of internal engineering tools, calculation methods, and design processes where additional verification or development is required.
  • Participate in project discussions as a technical engineering resource when structural input or clarification is needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Academic concentration or professional experience in structural engineering.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, or recent completion with results pending.
  • Experience designing pre-engineered metal building systems.
  • Working knowledge of structural framing principles applicable to low-rise steel buildings.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, design criteria, and project requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with clients and internal project teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a Houston-based, hybrid, or remote arrangement depending on experience and fit, with Houston preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using MBS or another comparable metal building design software platform.
  • Professional Engineer registration in the United States, or active progress toward PE licensure.
  • Strong prior engineering experience within the pre-engineered metal building industry.
