Donation and Family Advocate

Join our dynamic team and become a pivotal player in the journey of life-saving organ donations!

As a Donation and Family Advocate at Live on Nebraska, you will serve as a compassionate guide and advocate for families facing end-of-life decisions and considering organ donation. Your primary responsibility will be to facilitate sensitive conversations with families in hospitals, providing support, information, and guidance throughout the donation process.

This position requires a rotating on-call schedule of 24-hour shifts with additional extended work hours.

  • Be the trusted liaison and resource for families navigating the donation process.
  • Collaborate closely with hospital staff and team members to ensure timely and sensitive conversations about the gift of life.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and documentation standards.

  • Knowledge of Healthcare Practices: Familiarity with healthcare protocols, medical terminology, and ethical considerations related to end-of-life care and organ donation.

Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field is required, though a Master's is preferred.
  • Background in bereavement, donor management, counseling, or crisis intervention preferred.
  • Experience in critical care and organ procurement or transplant is preferred.
  • Participation in the rotating call schedule of 24-hour work shifts.
  • Dedicated to the organization’s mission and vision to increase organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
  • Promote a quality culture of excellence by actively engaging in quality assurance and continuous performance improvement activities while adhering to all policies, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols including: OSHA standards, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other equipment required for protection, reporting of safety incidents, and participation in the emergency action plan.
  • Participate in required organizational and/or departmental meetings and trainings.
  • Consistently demonstrate professionalism through interpersonal skills, effective communication, positive customer service, maintenance of confidentiality, and appropriate representation of the organization to the public.
  • Demonstrate intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Windows operating environment, major internet browsers, and general computer usage.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license, personal auto, auto insurance, and the ability to travel by vehicle or plane.

Working Conditions
  • Requires regular evening, night and weekend work with travel throughout Nebraska and Iowa as needed.
  • Position requires extended periods (more than 8 hours) of work, most of which is standing or walking with few breaks.
  • Requires the ability to work under stress with numerous interruptions, distractions, and changing priorities.
  • Required to move/carry equipment and instruments, routinely lifting up to a maximum of 25 pounds.
  • This position is a Level 1 – High Level Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and TB. Employees are in a hospital setting and have direct contact with donors or donor organs and tissues through donor management and recovery.
