Executive Overview

The Director of Benefits is a senior leadership position responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and communication of the organization's benefit programs. The Director will provide expert oversight of health and welfare plans, retirement programs, and wellness initiatives, ensuring all offerings are compliant with IRS and ERISA regulations. If you have 10 years experience managing benefits operations & implementation of benefit programs in Healthcare, this is the role for you!

Principal Functional Responsibilities

  • Strategic Benefit Design: Design, develop, and administer "best practices" benefit programs tailored to attract and retain high-performing talent while effectively managing costs, service delivery, and external resources.
  • Total Rewards Integration: Partner with the Director of Compensation, HRIS leadership, and executive stakeholders to design and execute a cohesive Total Rewards program that aligns with overall business strategies.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Direct and maintain ultimate responsibility for the Benefits staff, serving as a preceptor and mentor to less experienced team members.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Oversight: Ensure all company-sponsored plans and design changes comply with relevant legal requirements and government regulations, including PPA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, DOL, IRS, and ERISA reporting mandates.
  • External Relationship Management: Maintain and cultivate strategic relationships with external consultants, brokers, actuaries, and outsourcing service partners.
  • Process & Systems Optimization: Evaluate and implement effective processes to maintain efficiency in benefit delivery; collaborate with IT and HRIS teams to develop system enhancements and automated enrollment tools.
  • Issue Resolution & Liaison: Act as the primary resource and liaison for the HR Service Center regarding escalated issues and continuous process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources Management, or a related discipline is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Professional Certifications: Certification in an HR-related area is highly preferred, such as a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP).
  • Experience: 10 years of experience managing benefits operations, encompassing the implementation, administration, and compliance of qualified retirement plans and health/welfare initiatives.
  • Industry Focus: Proven experience within a complex integrated healthcare system or a large multi-divisional company is required.
  • Technical Skills: Prior experience with HRIS database management is required, along with proficiency in plan design for 403(b), 401(k), and non-qualified plans.

Must Haves

  • Extensive Leadership Experience: At least 10 years of experience managing benefits operations, specifically including the end-to-end implementation of benefit programs.
  • Healthcare Industry Expertise: Direct benefits management experience within the healthcare sector or a complex integrated healthcare system
  • Strategic Plan Oversight: Hands-on experience with the design, evaluation, compliance, and implementation of health and welfare plans, pensions, 403(b), and 401(k) programs.
