This posting will be used to fill four (4) Heavy Equipment Mechanic positions located at the Maple Grove Truck Station.
This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, fabricating, and modifying MnDOT equipment and are required to work alone on a regular basis with minimal supervision. In addition, this position will be responsible for evaluating mechanical failures and deciding which shop repairs are most practical, as well as monitoring unit conditions and assisting shop supervisors in the evaluation of equipment as needed. Other responsibilities include maintaining records of time, materials, and supplies, using computer diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot problems, as well as using computer programs, as well as using computer programs to enter work orders and activities. Overtime, weekend, and nighttime work is possible, especially during the snow and ice season.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in a set area with tool carts, sinks, hoists, and supplies easily accessible (i.e. the mechanics shop). The employee frequently uses gross and fine dexterity in a variety of positions including reaching outward and overhead, bending, working with outstretched arms and / or while lying on the back (i.e. on a creeper), climbing up onto a large vehicle, working from heights and bending over. The employee works with power tools, machinery / instruments and equipment, and hand tools requiring the frequent lifting and / or carrying / holding of supplies and parts up to 50 pounds. The employee will infrequently move between 50 and 70 pounds by pushing, pulling, or lifting and carrying. Working conditions include vision, noise, vibration, respiratory and chemical hazards, and occasional adverse weather conditions (Heat, cold, snow, rain, wind). The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate through writing, speaking and hearing, and also able to communicate with the use of electronic communication equipment, i.e., telephone, 2-way radio, computer, etc.

Candidates that currently have a Commercial Driver's License or CDL permit will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
Incumbents will be required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called in the event of an emergency and / or snow and ice event.
