Job Title: Staff Pharmacist – Mail-Order Specialty Pharmacy (Remote)Job DescriptionThis role provides clinical and operational pharmacy expertise in a remote, mail-order specialty pharmacy environment. The Staff Pharmacist reviews and verifies prescription orders, ensures safe and accurate dispensing, provides medication counseling, and supports high-volume prescription processing while collaborating closely with call center and program staff. The position focuses on delivering the right medication, in the right dose, to the right patient, while maintaining strict adherence to pharmacy regulations, program guidelines, and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Review and approve medication orders by interpreting physician prescriptions to ensure the correct drug, dose, strength, directions, quantity, and patient information are accurate.
- Conduct prescription review and data quality checks for incoming and outgoing prescriptions, ensuring clinical accuracy, quality, and appropriate drug utilization review.
- Verify orders that fall outside FDA-approved labeling and program guidelines and approve orders above FDA-approved dose maximums when supported by appropriate clinical documentation.
- Identify and resolve therapeutic incompatibilities and potential drug interactions to promote safe and effective medication use.
- Handle inbound and outbound calls with prescribers, provider offices, pharmacies, and members to clarify prescriptions, dosing, and administration instructions.
- Provide patient and family education over the phone regarding medication use, dosing schedules, side effects, storage, and strategies to minimize adverse events.
- Counsel patients on how and when to take medications, potential adverse events, and adherence strategies, including additional outreach and follow-up as required by regulatory programs such as REMS.
- Monitor drug therapies, identify and report adverse events and product complaints in accordance with pharmacy regulations and client requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, regulations, program guidelines, and internal policies, including quality assurance and legal compliance standards.
- Maintain up-to-date pharmacological and regulatory knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, building professional networks, and participating in professional societies.
- Ensure the program delivers correct, high-quality products to customers in a timely and professional manner, supporting a high-volume mail-order environment.
- Collaborate effectively with call center and other program staff to support efficient operations and high levels of customer service.
- Interact with clients as appropriate to support operational process reviews and provide subject matter expertise on pharmacy operations and clinical processes.
- Ensure established procedures for quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs are consistently followed.
- Report prescription errors immediately and adhere to company policy regarding medication incidents, including documentation and corrective actions.
- Supervise and guide pharmacy technicians and other staff by providing direction, oversight of work, and support in daily operations.
- Develop staff through detailed performance reviews, goal setting, coaching, mentoring, and ongoing feedback to support professional growth.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient and client information in all interactions and documentation.
- Use computer systems and data entry tools to process, verify, and document prescriptions accurately and efficiently, while handling multiple requests at once.
- Contribute to overall team goals by taking on related duties as needed to ensure smooth, compliant, and patient-focused pharmacy operations.
Essential Skills- Minimum 1–2 years of professional experience as a Pharmacist in a retail or specialty pharmacy setting.
- Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (. Pharm) required.
- Current and valid state Pharmacist license in good standing in the state of residence.
- Experience with high-volume prescription review and dispensing in a retail, specialty, or mail-order pharmacy environment.
- Demonstrated experience in prescription review, dosing, dosage verification, and drug interaction assessment.
- Experience working in environments such as retail pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, pharmacy benefits management (PBM), or managed care settings.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer skills, including the ability to manage multiple requests and tasks simultaneously.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with patients, prescribers, provider offices, and internal teams.
- Proven ability to analyze information and exercise sound judgment and decision making in clinical and operational scenarios.
- Knowledge of FDA health regulations, pharmacology, and pharmacy law relevant to dispensing and clinical review.
- Experience with prior authorization processes, prescription refills, and pharmacy benefit structures.
- Demonstrated focus on quality, attention to detail, and accuracy in reviewing and fulfilling medication orders.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable regulations and program guidelines.
- Customer service experience, particularly in call center or phone-based support environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree preferred.
- Experience in specialty pharmacy, particularly handling high-cost and complex specialty medications.
- Experience in pharmacy management or leadership, including supervising and guiding staff.
- Exposure to pharmacy benefits management (PBM) operations and managed care pharmacy.
- Experience with pharmacy call center operations, including inbound and outbound calls to patients, prescribers, and pharmacies.
- Skill in administering medication counseling and providing clear patient education remotely.
- Familiarity with legal compliance requirements related to controlled substances and hazardous drug handling.
- Ability to contribute to process improvement and operational reviews with internal teams and clients.
- Comfort working in a structured, metrics-driven environment with defined performance expectations.
- Willingness to complete required continuing education to maintain licensure and stay current with evolving pharmacy laws and clinical guidelines.
Work EnvironmentThis position is based in a remote, closed-door mail-order specialty pharmacy environment where medications are shipped directly to patients’ homes. The pharmacy handles high-cost, complex specialty drugs that require careful handling, thorough verification, and detailed patient counseling. Pharmacy hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 . to 10:00 ., and shifts may fall between 8:00 . and 8:00 ., with the possibility of earlier start times (such as 6:00 and future weekend coverage based on business needs. The role involves extensive computer use for data entry, prescription verification, and documentation, as well as frequent phone interaction with patients, prescribers, provider offices, and internal call center staff. Training includes an initial onboarding period of up to two and a half days, typically from 8:30 . to 5:00 . EST, followed by approximately four weeks of program-specific training during the same hours. Candidates must be available for the full training period and should not plan time off during this time. The position is offered as a 12-month contract with the potential for conversion to a permanent role based on business needs and individual performance, providing a structured, professional environment focused on quality, patient safety, and collaborative teamwork.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $55.00 - $65.00/hr.
