Job description

Human Resources Generalist

Under the general supervision of the Chief People Officer, the experienced HR Generalist position provides comprehensive support across the full employee life cycle. The responsibilities include delivering timely, empathetic employee support, coordinating leaves of absence and workers' compensation processes, supporting benefit enrollments, supporting recruitment activities and other HR projects & initiatives. This role plays a critical part in ensuring smooth HR operations, positive employee experiences, and consistent agency values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: This is not an exhaustive task list, and other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate or necessary by the supervisor or program director.   • Respond to HR-related questions from employees in a timely, empathetic, and accurate manner.
  • Provide high-quality, timely, and professional customer service to employees at all levels within the organization.
  • Conduct onboarding, new employee orientations, and assist in enrolling in benefits.
  • Perform employee relations functions to address workplace concerns.
  • Partner and coach hiring managers regarding employment disciplinary actions, including Performance Improvement Plans and Corrective Actions. Review all disciplinary written documentation for accuracy and legal compliance. Support managers and employees during the discipline meeting.
  • Conduct investigations as required into workplace issues. Ensuring fair and impartial review and completed documented report of investigations and findings.
  • Ensure documentation and systems are up to date and aligned with company policies.
  • Continually maintain awareness of HR trends, and federal and state laws.
  • Create and perform training on new policies, procedures, handbook updates or new legislation as needed.
  • Support our internal performance review process by assisting in the review and editing of performance reviews.
  • May assist HR team with additional duties and projects as assigned, specifically including payroll and benefits and recruitment.
  • Manage the annual benefits open enrollment process by coordinating timelines, communicating benefit changes, facilitating employee education, and ensuring accurate and timely enrollment.
  • Manage the exit process to ensure timely delivery of final checks and appropriate documentation and exit interviews.
  • Assist in the management of leave requests (FMLA, ADA, personal, etc.) with the 3rd party administrator to ensure timely and compliant leave management.
  • Serve as liaison with third-party vendors and internal stakeholders to resolve workers' comp claims and accommodations and return to work efforts.
  • Coordinate and administer the employee wellness program, including planning wellness initiatives, promoting participation, evaluating program effectiveness, and partnering with vendors to enhance employee well-being.
  • Assist in establishing departmental measurements that support the accomplishment of the agency's strategic goals and meet the established measurements consistently.
  • Undertake and coordinate special projects from inception through implementation and follow-up; complete other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Maintain and protect the confidentiality of information.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and good judgement.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to ensure the smooth and seamless delivery of human resources services to the Agency and its members
  • Complete all documentation and maintain all paperwork and other required documentation as required for program compliance and accountability in accordance with MHALA standards, legal regulations and funding source requirements.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned.

Other Position Requirements:

  • Four plus years of HR generalist experience with deep expertise in employee relations, workers' compensation, leave management, performance management and recruitment processes.
  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business or related field preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of human resources administration
  • Must deliver a high level of customer service with employees at all levels within the organization.
  • Thrives on change and responds with innovation to required changes.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Must be self-starting, self-directed, highly organized and have the ability to juggle multiple tasks without losing productivity
  • Prior experience working remotely is preferred.
  • Ability to be service-focused and understand how to organize, adapt, and prioritize their workload, knowing when to call for guidance and yet comfortable with a large degree of autonomy.
  • Excellent organizational and verbal/written presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate positively and sensitively to employees who come from a wide range or personal, social, cultural, ethnic, racial, educational and professional backgrounds
  • Must be computer literate and have significant experience with Microsoft Office Suite, as well good basic computational math skills
  • Knowledgeable in HRIS systems, Paylocity preferred
  • Must have a polished and professional demeanor and be able to work closely with many different types of people in a non-hierarchical, service-oriented manner
  • Ability to commute and work out of all MHALA locations is necessary
  • Flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Driving with current class C driver's license, a vehicle for transportation, proof of valid automobile insurance, the ability to be insured by MHALA's liability insurance are conditions of employment
  • TB clearance and re-testing every year are conditions of continued employment
  • COVID-19 vaccinations or booster shots are not currently required, however this may become a requirement in the future. Failure to abide by any agency policy, including those relating to a vaccine or booster shot may result in termination of employment
  • Employment verification directly from three (3) past employers within the most recent 7-year period
