JOB SUMMARY Performs routine and standard laboratory tests and procedures on various biological specimens, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment to assist the physician in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
a. Associate Degree in Laboratory Science from an accredited junior or community college including training in an approved program, or equivalent, with certification or eligibility with accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT, etc.). Undergraduate degree in Science (biology, chemistry, nursing) and successful completion of medical laboratory technician trainee role. Minimum Work Experience a. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow standard laboratory procedures and instructions. b. Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department. Required Skills a. Manual dexterity sufficient to calibrate, operate and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
b. Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units and / or other authorized personnel.
c. Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with customer service policy.
d. Population Specific Competency : Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients / customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity. a. Medium : Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and / or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Obtains, receives and / or processes biological specimens, as outlined in appropriate procedure manual including verification and identification of patient and / or samples, requisitions, specimen, type, transport and storage requirements.
2. Performs routine and standard laboratory tests and procedures on various biological specimens, requiring use of standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment, basic understanding of physiological principles and variables.
3. Receives and / or prepares, reagents, basic solutions, stains, media, chemicals, expendable supplies, including labeling, storage and quality control. Ensures appropriate levels of inventory of supplies are maintained by submitting requests to section supervisor.
4. Participates in orientation / training of new personnel and medical technology students.
5. Communicates unusual test request / questions outside of normal established procedure to senior technologist or section supervisor. Maintains work area in neat, clean, and orderly condition.
6. Develops awareness of new techniques, procedures, equipment and instrumentation by assisting in new product evaluation, laboratory in-service and continuing education program, professional journals, trade magazines and attendance at outside seminars and / or training programs.
