Overview
ABM is seeking an experienced employment lawyer who wants more than a traditional in-house role. This position is a trusted advisor to the business, shaping employment law strategy at a national scale within a complex, people-driven organization.
In this role, you will work as part of a collaborative, high-performing team of employment attorneys to lead complex and business-critical employment matters supporting a workforce of more than 100,000 team members. The role spans sophisticated litigation and day-to-day counseling and requires close partnership with Operations and Human Resources to address real business challenges in a practical, scalable way.
A strong client focus, strategic mindset, accountability, and agility are essential. The successful candidate will be a collaborative partner who works effectively with leaders at all levels, translating legal risk into clear, actionable guidance.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Own and manage employment law disputes nationwide, including class and collective actions, single- and multi-plaintiff litigation, arbitrations, and government agency charges.
- Provide strategic oversight of employment litigation matters, including risk assessment, case strategy, budgeting and cost management, direction of outside counsel, and evaluation of appropriate early resolution opportunities.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Operations and Human Resources on individual team member matters and on policies and practices across the full spectrum of employment law issues, including wage and hour compliance, recruiting and hiring practices, performance management and discipline, separations, leaves of absence and accommodations, use of AI in the workplace, privacy, safety, and related workplace issues.
- Deliver clear, concise, and practical business-oriented legal advice—both written and verbal—on a daily basis to internal clients.
- Manage and oversee responses to administrative charges and complaints filed with the EEOC, DOL, OSHA, and related state and local agencies.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and partner with Operations and Human Resources to translate new requirements into operationally workable guidance.
- Collaborate across teams and lines of business to develop and implement policies, tools, and practices that align with ABM’s business strategy, reduce risk, and support a large, decentralized workforce.
Location & Work Model
This role may be based in ABM’s offices in Houston, TX; Atlanta, GA; or Cleveland, OH. ABM values in-person connection and collaboration, and this role works in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Education & Experience
- Minimum of seven years of relevant experience handling and/or managing employment law matters for multi-jurisdictional employers, gained in-house and/or at a law firm.
- Significant experience managing employment litigation, including the ability to independently assess risk, develop case strategy, effectively manage outside counsel, and evaluate resolution options at all stages of a matter. Courtroom experience is not required.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to prepare executive-level summaries, deliver virtual and in-person presentations, and build productive relationships internally and externally.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple matters through effective prioritization, clear communication, and disciplined matter management, while working collaboratively within a high-performing team.
- Knowledge of California employment law and experience managing PAGA litigation is preferred.
- Extensive experience proactively identifying and assessing employment law risks and solving problems through well-reasoned practical recommendations aligned with business objectives.
- JD degree from an ABA accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state, district, or territory.
- Proficiency in MS Office 365 including MS Teams
- Desirable additional experience includes experience handling employment law issues in a union environment and/or labor relations matters, and advising on matters under the federal or state Occupational Safety & Health Act.
