Part-Time Children's Librarian - John P. Holt Brentwood Library
Starting pay for this position is $26.07/hour.

Plus:
Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period.
$1000 annual Transportation Supplement (paid over 26 pay periods)
The City of Brentwood is seeking a customer service-minded professional to join its team as a Children's Librarian at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library. This master's-level position works directly with children, families, and caregivers in a welcoming, community-centered environment. The ideal candidate enjoys engaging with the public and brings a positive, service-focused approach, along with curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn.
The Part-Time Children's Librarian plays a key role in delivering high-quality children's services, assisting patrons, and supporting programming and departmental operations. This position will serve as Librarian-in-Charge during assigned weekday and weekend shifts and is typically scheduled for 25-29 hours per week. The selected candidate must be available to work a flexible schedule, including some daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on operational needs.

Located just south of Nashville in scenic Williamson County, the City of Brentwood is known for its high quality of life, strong schools, and engaged community. The John P. Holt Brentwood Library serves as a vibrant hub for lifelong learning and the arts, providing access to more than 165,000 books and other materials, including audiobooks, DVDs, music CDs, and online resources.
The Library's Children's Services area is an active, welcoming space designed to support learning and exploration through books, programs, and hands-on experiences for children and families. Situated in a beautiful park setting and bordered by a walking trail and arboretum, the Library provides a unique and inspiring work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides professional children's library services and support to patrons using knowledge of reference sources.
  • Stays current on new titles and topics in literature and provides readers' advisory services in person and by phone, assisting patrons in locating materials and titles of interest.
  • Collaborates with the Children's Services team to plan, develop, and deliver engaging library programs.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the Children's Department, including scheduling, budget support, and training staff on procedures and best practices.
  • Coordinates and participates in special projects and work groups as assigned; plans and attends special events promoting library resources and services.
  • May assist with collection development activities, including selection, acquisition, and weeding of physical and digital materials.

Minimum Training and Experience Required
  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with children.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Ability to work a flexible part-time schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience supporting children's programs and services preferred, as well as familiarity with technology and electronic databases.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines which includes a computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, telephone, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary to medium work.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures related to the job of Children Librarian I. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic to complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of Children's Librarian I.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with office equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be able to provide both individual and group instruction and reference services. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency related to the job of Children's Librarian I.
