Job description

Rail Yard Loader & Unloader

Unloads product from railcars to storage tanks and loads product into tank trailers within the rail yard, or plant site by performing the following duties. Manage the movement of all railcars into and out of the PVS Transportation Terminal. This position reports directly to the Terminal Supervisor and is directed in their job duties from time to time.

Loads, unloads and moves material within the plant yard, or work site, performing any combination of the following duties: Reads work order (place/pull) list or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved and loaded.

Complies with all safety procedures including use of personal protective equipment.

Reports daily tank levels using provided Daily Inventory Sheet - this determines space availability for unloading rail cars into the tank.

Takes samples of all incoming products, checks clarity, labels with identifying information tags and takes samples to laboratory for analysis. May perform some lab duties.

Performs all the duties for unloading rail cars:

  • Pressurizes tank cars for unloading and depressurizes after unloading.
  • Performs conductivity testing.
  • Connect proper plumbing to railcars and storage tanks and open/closes proper valves.
  • Opens railcar or tanker manways.
  • Loads product into storage tanks from railcars and installs all required nuts, bolts, and manyways on railcars for transit.
  • Maintains logs, rail car unloading forms and terminal inspection checklist.
  • Change filters, clean hoses, valves and steam rail cars when necessary.
  • Performs inspections of rail cars prior to leaving the terminal and report any findings.

Yard inspections performed daily to maintain cleanliness (debris, seals, paper, etc.)

Assists loading trucks for common carriers.

Make simple adjustments and or repairs in the rail yard and or when or where necessary.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with groups of customers, suppliers, during audits and/or employee activities.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Ability to apply logical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
