Detention Officer
To create an eligibility list for the position of Detention Officer.
Processes individuals into the Independence Police Detention facility. Responsible for intake of personal belongings; booking; fingerprinting and searching detainees/prisoners; completes medical questionnaires. Monitor the detention area to provide safety and security for arrestees. Coordinates the bonding and/or arraignment of detainees with Municipal/ State/ Federal Court; provides courts with proper documentation. Arranges meals and makes provisions for personal needs of prisoners. Maintains the detention facility; cleans cells; laundry; and supplies. Perform data entry of required records and reports. Inform the Detective Unit of felony arrests and arraignments and other duties as directed.
High school diploma or GED, or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Aptitude in record keeping, report preparation, computer applications and effective communication is desired. Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire and complete certification in CPR, First Aid, AED and LVNR within three years. Knowledge of applicable detention laws as well as ability to maintain order and security within the detention unit preferred.
Stairs, walking, infrequent running, occasional lifting or moving and physical strength to restrain abusive and violent individuals. Hand dexterity to operate a computer.
Occasional exposure to hazardous situations involving armed or physically violent persons. Minimal exposure to extreme weather conditions of heat and cold. Contact with toxic or caustic cleaning chemicals.
Must be available for shifts and weekends.

Requires a valid driver's license, drug testing, a comprehensive background check and successful completion of a lift and drag test (Approximately 165 lbs. for 100 feet).
