Marine Mechanic - San Diego, CA (1st Shift)

Job Description

  • This role focuses on diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing marine outboard engines, with a strong emphasis on Evinrude outboard motors. You will work in a shipyard environment supporting a wide range of marine vessels by performing mechanical and electrical repairs, routine maintenance, and detailed inspections to ensure safe and reliable operation of marine propulsion systems.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, and overhaul outboard boat engines, with a primary focus on Evinrude outboard engines.
  • Analyze defects and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems on outboard motors to identify root causes of issues.
  • Disassemble engines and related components using mechanic’s hand tools and gauges to inspect for worn or defective parts.
  • Replace components such as gears, magneto points, piston rings, spark plugs, and other engine parts, and reassemble engines to manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform routine engine maintenance, including inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and preventive service to maximize engine performance and longevity.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed repair and maintenance records for all work performed, ensuring proper documentation and traceability.
  • Follow directions from supervisors and adhere to established work rules, procedures, and corporate policies, goals, and objectives.
  • Demonstrate reliability by appearing for work on time and consistently meeting scheduling and attendance expectations.
  • Collaborate and interact effectively with co-workers, contributing to a positive and professional team environment.
  • Accept constructive feedback, establish personal goals and objectives, and show initiative and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, requested, or needed to support operations and customer requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Previous shipyard or Navy experience working as a Marine Mechanic, Engineman, Outside Machinist, or Machinist Mate.
  • At least 3 years of applicable experience in marine mechanical repair or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing marine engines, including outboard motors.
  • Ability to maintain and repair engines with an emphasis on Evinrude outboard engines.
  • Proficiency in analyzing defects and adjusting or repairing electrical and mechanical systems on outboard motors.
  • Skill in using mechanic’s hand tools, gauges, and related equipment for disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of engines.
  • Capability to perform routine engine maintenance and preventive service on marine engines.
  • Ability to maintain accurate repair and maintenance records and follow established documentation practices.
  • Eligibility to obtain DBIDS access for work on secured shipyard facilities.
  • Strong adherence to safety practices and shipyard procedures in a marine industrial environment.
  • Ability to follow directions, comply with corporate policies and procedures, and work effectively within a team.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in ship repair or shipyard environments, including exposure to Navy, commercial, or private yacht projects.
  • Proficiency in diesel engines, rotating machinery, pumps, governors, controls, hydraulics, welding, or valve repair.
  • Experience as a Machinist Mate or Outside Machinist, particularly in marine or shipboard applications.
  • Familiarity with marine boilers, engines, and related propulsion systems.
  • Comfort working with electro-mechanical systems and marine mechanical components.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Demonstrated initiative, commitment, and willingness to learn and grow within a technical environment.

Work Environment

  • Work takes place in shipyard environments at locations such as NASSCO, BAE, CMSD, and NBSD, supporting Navy, commercial, and private yacht markets. The setting involves hands-on work around marine vessels, rotating machinery, pumps, diesel engines, and electro-mechanical systems in an industrial maritime environment. Standard shift hours are typically 1st shift from 6:00 . to 2:30 ., with the expectation of flexibility for overtime Monday through Saturday as needed, including potential 10-hour workdays. You will use mechanic’s hand tools, gauges, and other industrial equipment while adhering to shipyard safety protocols and procedures. The role includes wearing appropriate safety gear and uniforms suitable for shipyard and mechanical work, with support provided for safety footwear and prescription safety glasses. The environment emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, and adherence to safety and security requirements, including eligibility for access to secured facilities.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
