Job description

Executive Director for Integrated Student Counseling and Health Services

The Executive Director for Student Integrated Counseling and Health Services provides visionary, strategic, and operational leadership for Old Dominion University's comprehensive, integrated student health enterprise, encompassing medical healthcare and behavioral health. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Well-Being & Belonging, the Executive Director is responsible for advancing a student-centered, collaborative model of care that promotes well-being, belonging, retention, academic success, and persistence to graduation. As the inaugural Executive Director, this role is charged with designing, leading, and sustaining a deeply integrated clinical and administrative structure that elevates both behavioral health and physical health as equally vital, interdependent components of student success. The Executive Director oversees all aspects of healthcare delivery and administration while fostering a culture of innovation, equity, collaboration, and continuous improvement; responsibilities include clinical operations, healthcare compliance, electronic medical records (EMR) systems, budget and revenue management, facilities, information technology, risk management, assessment, and accreditation through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) or comparable bodies. This role also serves as a key institutional leader and advisor on student health, well-being, public health, crisis response, and emergency preparedness. The Executive Director collaborates extensively with campus partners, healthcare systems, and community providers to ensure continuity of care and the delivery of high-quality, student-centered services. Given the nature of the positions in the Division of Student and Campus Life that provide support to student services and/or student-centered programs, the employee occupying this position may be required to work during a university closing. This position is required to complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interest upon hire in accordance with the Code of Virginia. This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution in a relevant field such as public health, counseling, psychology, social work, nursing, medicine, health care administration, higher education administration, or a closely related discipline.
  • Considerable demonstrated progressive leadership experience in behavioral health, healthcare administration, including responsibility for ambulatory, outpatient, or integrated healthcare environments.
  • Considerable experience leading within healthcare or clinical service organizations that include oversight of professional staff, fostering a culture of innovation, equity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience with budget development and fiscal oversight, including long-range financial planning and revenue management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage organizational change in complex environments while aligning healthcare services with institutional goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in electronic medical records (EMR) systems, healthcare data reporting, and clinical information systems.

Additional Considerations:

  • Earned doctorate or terminal degree (e.g., MD, DO, PhD, PsyD, EdD, DNP, DrPH) in a relevant healthcare, behavioral health, or administrative field.
  • Professional licensure or eligibility for licensure in a health or behavioral health discipline (e.g., psychology, counseling, social work, nursing, medicine).
  • Experience in college health, counseling services, student affairs, or higher education environments.
  • Considerable demonstrated leadership in developing or sustaining integrated or collaborative care models that bridge behavioral health and physical health.
  • Experience with accreditation, quality assurance, and compliance processes in ambulatory care, including active involvement with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and/or International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) or comparable bodies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead with a systems-thinking, equity-minded, and student-centered approach.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and consensus-development skills across diverse professional disciplines and stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledge of best practices in integrated health care delivery, population health, trauma-informed care, and student mental health trends.
  • Experience using data, assessment, and performance improvement frameworks to inform decision-making and demonstrate outcomes.
  • Proficiency with healthcare technologies, including electronic medical records, data dashboards, and administrative systems.
  • Ability to balance strategic vision with operational execution in a complex, fast-paced environment.
