Job Description
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven, entry level nuclear engineer to join the Future Reactor Concepts team. This position offers the unique opportunity to become a member of the team that focuses on : (1) defining the reactor core design spaces and technology required for a next generation attack submarine targeting high-level notional goals, and (2) evaluating core cost versus performance capability trade-offs. An entry-level candidate will be expected to use their nuclear engineering education to assess the neutronics performance of new technology concepts in support of improving the performance of naval reactors. The successful candidate must also have a passion to develop a broad understanding of how multiple disciplines impact the reactor core design space. The project is currently in the conceptual design phase, and the work may be performed with simple, first-principles-based scoping tools utilizing the latest nuclear design codes. This phase will be followed by a formal core design effort requiring high fidelity nuclear model development and qualification. This project requires frequent and effective communication with other core design, materials performance, core manufacturing, and reactor plant development groups.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
- Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in nuclear engineering or physics; or
- Masters degree from an accredited college or university in nuclear engineering or physics.
