Job Summary:

This position is responsible for teaching nursing clinical courses. This includes coordinating with the clinical coordinator to prepare course materials and schedules, and providing students with clear instruction and expectations for their clinical rotations.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Understand and uphold the values and mission of the College.
CCD is a teaching and learning institution; we specialize in student success. Adjunct instructors must be more than subject area experts; they must be effective, developing teachers.

CCD instructors are knowledgeable about pedagogy, methods, retention, diversity, assessment and college and community life. All instructors must successfully complete the New Faculty Orientation during the first semester they teach. Per the Online Hybrid Procedure, all instructors who teach online or in hybrid formats must be credentialed through the Teaching Learning Center before the first day of class they are assigned to teach.

Learning and student success is placed at a high value for all CCD instructors, staff and students.

Teach assigned clinical. Clinical Instructors are expected to:

  • Work in close collaboration with the clinical coordinator to ensure students receive all clinical materials and schedules prior to the start of clinical
  • Effectively communicate with students and provide clear written instructions of clinical expectations
  • Start and end clinical per scheduled times, no early dismissals are permitted in order to comply with Board of Nursing regulations.
  • In the event of snow closures, absences or illness, instructors must be available to offer make-up days either in clinical settings or the simulated lab.
  • Ensure preparedness by familiarizing self with student objectives and identify methods to support student achievement of these objectives within the clinical setting.
  • Grade clinical assignments to evaluate student’s critical thinking and clinical judgment.
  • Perform direct 1:1 student observations to include supervision of nursing interventions, patient assessments, and medication administration in the clinical environment to ensure safe practice and mastery of skills.
  • Be familiar with program and clinical site policies that determine student scope of practice and ensure student works within scope.
  • Facilitate immediate reporting of any injury or medical error following program and site policies and follow procedural steps to provide emergency treatment and worker’s compensation if applicable.
  • Perform frequent student evaluations utilizing standardized evaluative tools, refer students to remediation as needed, and report unsatisfactory performance to clinical coordinator and DNEP. Instructors are expected to provide constructive feedback, guidance, and to set performance expectations in the event a student does not perform with competency.
  • Enforce clinical policies as outlined and report any policy infractions immediately to the clinical coordinator and DNEP.
  • Meet all conditions of employment for CCD including any credentialing and licensure requirements.

If you know in advance you cannot hold your clinical, make prior arrangements with your chair

Communicate any site issues, decisions, or needs with clinical coordinator to facilitate decision-making and to provide support

If you have a discipline issue, speak with your chair. If needed, you will then progress through the proper channels to involve the College’s Student Conduct Officer. If a student has a complaint related to the course, they will be directed to you. If you cannot resolve the student complaint, speak with your chair. The chair will then involve the dean if warranted

Clinical instructors will participate in simulation training and be responsible for familiarizing themselves with standardized patient care scenarios designated for their specialty. Instructors will also learn how to implement the Debriefing with Good Judgement Debriefing Model to facilitate student learning.

Promote a professional image and standard by abiding with all relevant Program, College and System policies

Instructors must become familiarized with the student handbook and policies outlined by the Practical Nursing Program.

At the start of the semester, provide and review with students:
The clinical schedule and site location, instructions when and where to meet, and any required materials to bring to clinical.
Provide a communication method to report absences, illness, delayed starts and/or cancellations

Attendance:

  • Taking attendance is mandatory. Maintain accurate records of attendance.
  • Report late arrivals/absences and refer students to the clinical coordinator and DNEP for an excused absence.
  • Ensure students who are not assigned or not permitted to attend the scheduled clinical are not permitted on the clinical premises.
  • Communicate your attendance policy and expectations to your students.
  • Submit attendance records to the clinical coordinator at the conclusion of the clinical assignment.


Grading:

  • Maintain accurate grading records, to include evaluations of students work.
  • Communicate your grading policy and expectations to your students.
  • Submit all grades and associated clinical materials (assignments, narrative notes etc) to the clinical coordinator no later than 3 days after the conclusion of the clinical assignment.
  • Syllabus: The clinical coordinator oversees course materials to include the development and distribution of the course syllabus, handouts, and schedules. The clinical instructor is to access D2L course shells to familiarize themselves with clinical materials prior to the start of clinical.


Communication:

  • Conduct all College business using the CCD email account.
  • Check CCD email account at least every 48 hours during the teaching week and respond promptly to messages.
  • Check campus mailbox(es) on a weekly basis.


Student Evaluations:

  • Facilitate the distribution and collection of all instructional and clinical evaluations required by the Practical Nursing Program.
  • Allow for clinical observation by dean, chair, faculty member or senior adjunct instructor to be determined by department chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university whose Nursing Education program has national nursing accreditation.

Experience:
Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in diverse environments.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to deliver curriculum in a dynamic environment that engages students.
  • Adaptability and organizational skills that will allow supervision of students in laboratory and clinical settings providing appropriate and constructive feedback.
  • Technology knowledge and skills that will allow development and integration of current technological educational methodologies in and out of the classroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and manage a diverse student group.


Licensure/Certification:
Colorado Registered Nurse.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience:
One (1) year of teaching experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities at the PN level or higher in the clinical, lab, or clinical learning environment.
