Primary Location : Pool, Pool Deck

The Highlands Recreation District operates under the Community Services District law pursuant to the government code 61000 et seq, for the purpose of providing recreational services within the District. Services are provided under the leadership and direction of an elected Board of Directors. The Highlands Recreation District maintains facilities including the Recreation Center, Early Education Center, After School Center, Tennis Courts, Pool, and Playgrounds in addition to a variety of programs, services, and annual special events.

Job Summary

The Swim Instructor provides comprehensive support to individuals of all ages, including children and adults, in the enhancement of their swimming techniques and skills. This is achieved through both individualized instruction and group lessons.

Essential Functions and Tasks

  • Positively and professionally teach swimming skills to students of various ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers.
  • Follow the approved swim curriculum and implement lesson plans that cater to individual student needs and learning styles.
  • Introduce and teach competitive swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly) and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Use appropriate teaching aids and equipment to enhance learning, additionally ensuring that all swimming aids and equipment are kept in optimal condition.
  • Instruct students on water safety rules and procedures.
  • Maintain safety and constant supervision of students in the water to ensure everyone's safety.
  • Assist in preventing and addressing safety concerns of all patrons in and around the pool.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean and organized pool area.
  • Represent the department and organization through proper uniform standards.
  • Attend all in-service trainings including those outside of regular working hours.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)

  • Must be able to maintain long-term customer relationships, building trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to learn and implement emergency assistance according to the EAP.
  • Ability to grow and develop instructional swimming techniques.
  • Ability to be reliable and responsible for assigned shifts.
  • Knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper swimming techniques.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain a work permit if under 18 years old.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • USA / YUSA Swimming Background
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
  • Swim Team - USA Swimming and or ASCA Swim Coach Background
  • Special Needs Certification - Swim Angel Fish Knowledge
  • Physical Demands and Work Environment

    The position works in both indoor and outdoor environments, subject to severe hot, cold, and inclement weather. The physical demands of this position are described below.

  • Sitting, walking, swimming, submersion under water, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
  • Fall (slip, trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
  • Heat illness / temperature extremes that result in heat stress, exhaustion, or metabolic slowdown such as hypothermia.
  • Chemical exposure - absorption through the skin, inhalation, or through the bloodstream that may cause illness, disease, or death.
  • Lifting and carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-150 lbs.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Minimum Hourly or Salary : $20.00 - Maximum Hourly Salary : $31.00

  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
  • In general, the position works on a schedule based on the business needs and may require early morning, evening, and weekend work.
  • May work up to, but not in excess of 29 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).

    This position is employed through the Highlands Recreation District which offers employees of this classification to receive paid sick time, and Simple IRA retirement account participation with up to a 3% District match (if employee makes more than $5,000 in a year), and employee discounts in accordance with Highlands Recreation District Employee Handbook.

    Required Staff Training

    Prior and during hiring process, all employees are required to complete the following compliance online training sessions through Paylocity. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from the HR department.

  • Job Health and Safety Trainings.
  • Injury and Illness Prevention Program - one-time course.
  • Discrimination and Harassment - required every two years.
  • Mandated reporter training certificate.
  • CPR, First Aid, and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) certifications within 1 year of hire.
  • Background Check and Fingerprinting

    Employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work they will be doing.?

    In some cases, a background check will include a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable.

    California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act

    All childcare workers are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Department of Social Services, Child Care Licensing.

    $20.00-$31.00 / hour
