Job description

The position is located in Sells, AZ.

Position Summary:

Under close supervision, serves as 911 dispatch operator for public safety receiving emergency and non- emergency calls from the public; broadcasts and responds to police radio patrol units and other public safety agencies; receives public inquires and complaints; maintains call logs and perform clerical duties.

The work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives and answers 911 emergency calls and non-emergency calls.
  • Broadcasts orders to police radio patrol units in vicinity to investigate complaint, and relays instructions or questions from remote units.
  • Collects, analyzes and prioritizes information received.
  • Records calls broadcast and complaints into Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.)
  • Retrieves computerized criminal justice information files using the Arizona Criminal Justice Information System and National Crime Information Center.
  • Coordinates all police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency requests, relaying instructions to radio unit concerned.
  • Transmits and receives messages between divisions of own agency and other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Contacts Police Officers to verify assignment locations as required.
  • Utilizes and operates a two-way radio communication system, dual cassette recording system, PC and Incident Computer and copier.
  • Maintains and ensures that computer and radio equipment is operational and functional.
  • Monitors silent alarm system to detect illegal entry into business establishments.
  • Conveys phone messages; responds to requests from other employees and the public and provides routine information to the public.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating all tribal, Pima County warrants forms and logs.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of Arizona Criminal Justice Information System, Computer Aide Dispatch and Records Management Information System.
  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham Nations Criminal and Traffic Code, Children's/Juvenile Code and the department's policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of radio dispatch and communication.
  • Skill in the operation of computers and office equipment that includes copier, telephone and audio equipment.
  • Skill in preparing clear, concise, accurate, and complete written reports.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Skill in communicating effectively, courteously and clearly and speaking distinctly, and responding promptly.
  • Ability to operate radio communication equipment.
  • Ability to remain calm and handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in emergency situations.
  • Ability to handle psychological stresses of works.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with the general public, tribal government and other law enforcement and Public Safety agencies.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma, and one year work experience as a communications operator or dispatcher, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain a Terminal Operator (A) Certification, within six months of hire.
  • Must be able to type at least 30 WPM.
  • Must demonstrate sixty percent proficiency in grammar, spelling, and math.
  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid, within the first six months of hire.
  • Must pass an extensive law enforcement criminal background investigation prior to Any criminal record history will disqualify applicant.
  • May be subjected to an auditory examination.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
