Job description

Radio Station General Manager

Radio Station General Manager provides strategic leadership, operational oversight and regulatory compliance for the Tribe's radio stations (including KPYT and KPYU). This position is responsible for developing and executing programming, business operations, community engagement, and revenue strategies aligned with Tribal priorities and public media standards.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Direct and oversee all radio station operations, including programming, production, transmission, and administrative functions.
  2. Supervise staff, contractors, and volunteers; assign work, evaluate performance, and support professional development.
  3. Maintain compliance with FCC regulations, grant requirements, and Tribal policies.
  4. Ensure safe, efficient, and continuous station operations.
  5. Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans for radio operations and growth.
  6. Align station programming and services with Tribal goals, community needs, and cultural priorities.
  7. Identify opportunities to expand audience reach and digital platforms (streaming, social, podcasting).
  8. Establish, implement, and communicate goals, objectives, policies, and procedures in accordance with strategic plan.
  9. Develop and manage station budgets and financial plans.
  10. Lead fundraising, underwriting, and grant development efforts (e.g., CPB, NPR, foundations).
  11. Monitor financial performance and ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
  12. Improve staff effectiveness by coaching, counseling, training, and recommending disciplinary action for employees, and by planning delegating, monitoring and appraising job tasks, and results in a timely manner.
  13. Support development of local content, including news, public affairs, and cultural programming.
  14. Review news programs for on-the-air broadcasting; determine accuracy, quality, production value, and compliance with station policies, Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules, regulations, and laws regulating matters of libel and slander.
  15. Keep Tribal Council, Economic Development, and other departments informed of status of activities by attending meetings and submitting reports.
  16. Stay abreast of new technologies and principles by conducting research; attend seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences. Review professional publications, establish networks, participate in professional societies, and confer with related organizations.
  17. Hold regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel regarding program-related activities.
  18. Prepare quarterly reports as required by the Federal Communications Commission.
  19. Represent 100.3LPFM KPYT-LP and 100.7-LPFM KPYU-LP Radio in the communities.
  20. Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans for radio operations and growth.
  21. Must teach public radio and/or radio broadcasting.
  22. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Radio station operations, broadcast standards, and FCC regulations;
  • Advanced radio production procedures and techniques;
  • Organizational leadership, radio program planning, and radio operational management
  • Public media systems (NPR, CPB and NFCB) regulations, guidelines and standards and funding models;
  • Effective principles and practices of management and supervision;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Manage, supervise, and develop employees;
  • Analyze problems, project consequences, identify solutions, and implement recommendations;
  • Prepare, review, and analyze operational and statistical reports;
  • Strong financial management, budgeting, and reporting;
  • Operate various Microsoft applications, and radio software programs;
  • Work independently and meet strict timelines;
  • Interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds;
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Exercise independent judgment;
  • Maintain confidentiality;
  • Operate a variety of office and radio station equipment.

Education, Certifications and Experience Required

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Broadcasting, Communications or related field, plus three (3) years of progressive work experience in radio or broadcasting management. or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License;
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends;
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain the current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
