PATH Train Conductor
Conductors are responsible for managing the overall safe, on-time operation of their individual trains within the scope of the rules of the Transportation Department. The essential functions include, but are not limited to :
- Communicate information to passengers, crew members, and other railroad employees in person and via onboard communication channels
- Meeting and exceeding customer expectations by delivering great service
- Ensure compliance with all railroad and safety rules
- Ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administrative Regulations
- Operate train doors at station stops and assist customers on and off trains as necessary
- Read, understand, comply with bulletin orders, general orders and other applicable rules of the Transportation Department
- Manage emergency situations such as medical emergencies, equipment breakdowns and evacuation of passengers if necessary
- Verbally direct the movement of trains
- Provide professional customer service to passengers
- Register for duty on time
- Prepare trains for service and conduct complete train check before and after the train has reached its final destination to make sure all passengers have disembarked
Training Program : Conductors undergo a training program of approximately 8 weeks. In this training, conductors will participate in a combination of classroom and field training and will receive assessments weekly. Conductors are required to successfully complete training and obtain the required Certification as mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Failure to do so may result in termination from employment.

Candidates who qualify on the practical exam will be eligible to be offered a position as they become available. Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check which includes a review of previous DOT-regulated employment and driver's license history and medical examination, which includes Hearing & Vision.

Compensation & Benefits
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey & PATH Corporation offer a competitive salary, an outstanding benefits package and a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement. The starting salary for : Conductor Trainee is $33.80 Per Hour. (Subject to collective bargaining agreement) This position is deemed safety sensitive per the Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol Regulations. Locomotive Engineers are subject to tests for Drugs & Alcohol pursuant to Federal requirements, which include pre-employment, random, post-accident / incident, and reasonable suspicion tests. DOT Regulations do not allow for the use of medical or recreational marijuana.
PATH operates 24 hours per day / 7 days per week / 365 days per year. Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off. A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH's unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods. Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment. Commitment to attendance is expected and required.
