Position Summary
The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and the Northeast Regional Alliance MedPrep HCOP Academy Program (MedPrep) are designed to support undergraduate students who are economically disadvantaged and/or identify with groups that have been historically underrepresented within the health professions. The support provided for participating scholars help them to become more competitive applicants to health professions schools. Each year, SHPEP serves 80 scholars while MedPrep is offered to 20 scholars who will be rising college sophomores and juniors at the time of program participation.
TEACHING ASSISANTS, or FACILITATORS, will be responsible for assisting with the supervision, guidance and education of college students enrolled in the summer programs.
Responsibilities
SHPEP Program Facilitators will be responsible for assisting with the supervision, guidance and education of college students enrolled in the summer program. Specific responsibilities will require that Program Facilitators:
- Leading a small group within the entire cohort of students (SHPEP= ~10 students, MedPrep = ~17 students)
- Taking attendance at all curriculum related classes with students for whom you are assigned to serve as a resident/teaching assistant
- Assisting with in-person/virtual labs
- Hosting study groups for your assigned course
- Holding office hours once a week
- Grading course related assignments (including pre-test, mid-term, finals, and quizzes)
- Attendance at particular seminars at which you will assist with setting up virtual presentations and introducing speaker(s)
- Serving as a program facilitator for Accelerated Learning Skills (ALS), Nutrition & Health Disparities, and Narrative Medicine sessions as assigned
- Serving as a program facilitator for Body Interact sessions as applicable
- Attending to RA duties as assigned throughout the duration of the program at 50 Haven (SHPEP only and housing provided for June and July 2025)
- Assisting with residential duties (SHPEP only)
- Facilitate research seminar (MedPrep only)
- Attending weekly meetings with course instructors and program administrators
- Attending theme lunches
- Hosting at least 1 social activity per week with your small group
- Attending all mandatory activities
- Assist with the annual Recruitment Fair
- Providing a written evaluation for each student in respect to small groups
- General Clerical Duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalency
Preferred Qualifications
- Full time CUMC/Columbia student. Education and training in science and/or mathematics is required.
- Previous teaching experience is extremely helpful, but not necessary.
