Indiana University Health (IU Health) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Bariatric Psychologist to join our Bariatric Surgery team. Indiana University Health is a comprehensive healthcare system dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
Job Details
- Full-time
- Monday - Friday
- Opportunity to work from home one day per week
- Patients include those seeking bariatric surgery and post-op bariatric surgery patients
- Patient volume: 12 behavioral health evaluations and 4 follow-ups per week
- Multi-disciplinary team includes surgeons, RNs, RDs, exercise physiologists, and behavioral health professionals
- Practice locations include IU Health North Hospital in Carmel, IN and IU Health West Hospital in Avon, IN
Key Responsibilities
- The primary responsibility of the Bariatric Psychologist is to provide psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery candidates. These evaluations include a diagnostic clinical interview as well as psychological assessment.
- The Bariatric Psychologist also provides direction and support to patients throughout the various stages of the program as needed, from initial evaluation to long-term follow-up, often by offering individual therapy and support groups.
Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.)
- HSPP Required
- Experience and/or training in presurgical evaluations, bariatrics, pediatrics/adolescents, and research are preferred.
- The ideal candidate should possess a strong foundation in clinical psychology, with experience in behavioral medicine and weight-related health conditions.
- Candidate should be skilled in evidence-based interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapies, and psychoeducation, which are effective in addressing the psychological distress often associated with obesity, including depression and anxiety. A deep understanding of the biopsychosocial model of obesity is essential, recognizing that weight is influenced by complex genetic, physiological, emotional, and environmental factors.
- Candidate should be adept at conducting thorough psychodiagnostics assessments to identify underlying mental health conditions that may impact treatment adherence or outcomes.
- Experience in multidisciplinary settings—such as bariatric surgery teams or chronic disease management programs—would be highly valuable.
- The ideal candidate must demonstrate empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to reducing stigma, helping patients shift from a weight or shape-focused mindset to improvement in overall health and quality of life.
