Overview

The Surgical Technologist plays a critical role in the operating room by preparing surgical environments, ensuring sterile technique, and assisting surgeons during operative procedures. The Surgical Tech helps maintain patient safety and supports efficient OR workflow.

Key Responsibilities Pre-Operative Duties

Prepare OR suites with necessary sterile equipment and supplies

Inspect instruments for cleanliness and proper functioning

Verify case carts and surgical preference cards

Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping patients

Intraoperative Duties

Maintain a sterile field at all times

Pass instruments, sutures, and supplies to surgeons

Anticipate surgeon needs based on surgical steps

Use retractors, suction, or camera equipment as directed

Handle surgical specimens following protocols

Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts

Post-Operative Duties

Break down sterile field and handle instrument transport

Clean and restock OR rooms

Assist with turnover for the next case

Document case details and equipment issues

Team Collaboration

Work closely with RNs, anesthesia providers, and surgeons

Communicate equipment needs or shortages

Participate in OR safety initiatives (time-outs, fire safety, etc.)
