The Montessori Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in creating and maintaining a nurturing, respectful, and stimulating Montessori environment that fosters each child’s independence, curiosity, and love of learning. The Assistant Teacher helps prepare the classroom, assists children in daily activities, observes and documents progress, and ensures a safe and orderly environment. The role is essential in upholding the Montessori philosophy while providing individualized care and guidance for each child.
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to :
Assist the Lead Teacher in planning and implementing the daily program, including :
- Treating each child with dignity and respect.
- Supporting activities that encourage growth in emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development.
- Recognizing and considering the individual needs of each child in relation to cultural and socio-economic background, abilities, special talents and interests, and learning styles.
- Helping children think creatively, solve problems independently, and develop respect for themselves and others.
- Establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy, and engaging learning environment.
- Preparing and maintaining an orderly, clean, and stimulating Montessori classroom.
- Organizing Montessori materials to be accessible and inviting to children.
- Support children’s independent work by observing, guiding when needed, and redirecting without unnecessary interference.
- Observe children’s work and behavior, reporting progress and concerns to the Lead Teacher.
- Assist in maintaining accurate classroom and student records.
- Contribute to classroom planning by sharing observations with the teaching team.
- Support children with daily living activities (toileting, dressing, meals, hygiene).
- Model respectful communication and promote positive conflict resolution.
- Work to prevent injuries and respond appropriately to accidents and emergencies.
- Supervise the classroom when the Lead Teacher is temporarily out of the room.
- Assist with meal preparation and snack routines.
- Support classroom transitions throughout the day.
- Assist the Lead Teacher in normalizing the classroom environment.
- Maintain professional attitude, behavior, and dress at all times; use appropriate channels for resolving concerns.
- Participate in professional organizations that support early childhood education.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding children and their families.
- Promote strong rapport and teamwork among staff members.
- Ensure the classroom environment is clean, safe, and orderly at all times.
- Support daily routines, including sanitization and organization of supplies.
- Develop strong classroom management skills and help maintain classroom order.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Head of School.
- Participate in staff meetings, parent events, and professional development opportunities.
Collaborate with administration to uphold the school’s mission of excellence.
