Job Summary :
The Special Education Teacher for students with mild intellectual disabilities provides individualized instruction, support, and guidance to help students achieve academic, social, and behavioral success. This educator develops and implements IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) aligned with state standards and works collaboratively with general education teachers, parents, and related service providers to foster inclusive educational experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Develop and implement effective instructional plans tailored to meet the unique needs of students with mild intellectual disabilities.
Provide direct instruction in academic, functional, and adaptive skills using evidence-based practices.
Adapt curriculum materials and teaching strategies to support diverse learning styles and abilities.
Administer and interpret assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction.
Develop and manage Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal, state, and district regulations.
Collaborate with general education teachers to modify assignments and provide accommodations for inclusion settings.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress reports, behavior data, and parent communication.
Implement behavior management techniques to promote positive classroom conduct and support social-emotional development.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, classroom activities, and strategies for home support.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, staff development, and professional learning communities.
Maintain confidentiality of student records and uphold ethical and legal responsibilities under IDEA and Section 504.
Qualifications :
Education : Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field (Masters preferred).
Certification : Valid state teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education Mild Disabilities (or eligibility for certification).
Experience : Prior experience teaching students with intellectual disabilities or in inclusive settings preferred.
Knowledge and Skills :
Strong understanding of IEP development and implementation.
Knowledge of differentiated instruction and behavior intervention strategies.
Ability to integrate assistive technology and specialized instructional tools.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning.
Working Conditions :
School-based environment; may involve small-group and one-on-one instruction.
Regular interaction with students, parents, staff, and community partners.
May require lifting or assisting students with physical needs.
Follows the academic calendar and district policies.
