Summary :
Reporting to the Co-Director of Production, the Technical Director oversees the design, management, and execution of all technical aspects of productions of varying disciplines and styles staged at and / by the Performing Arts Program involving students, guest artists, and various other constituencies on and off campus in alignment with its evolving Performing Arts goals and philosophies.
Job Description :
- Manages events and productions by Performing Arts Program partners and resident companies; and manages events hosted by Gallaudet University at Performing Arts Program facilities.
- Collaborates with Performing Arts faculty, staff, and guest artists to successfully oversee and execute all scenic and other technical design elements for Performing Arts productions, including, but not necessarily limited to, lumber and steel construction, painting, props, and final finish adjustment work.
- Reviews, interprets, and troubleshoots design drawings to assess financial and practical feasibility and to maximize intended artistic impact within allocated financial resources.
- Attends design runs, technical rehearsals, and previews, while prioritizing notes and work calls in order to ensure successful executions of production stagings in an efficient, safe, and timely manner.
- Liaises with outside presenters and touring companies regarding their use of Performing Arts Program facilities to insure smooth and efficient load-ins rehearsals, performances and load- outs.
- Maintains inventory of production consumables and budget replacement items within production / technical budgets as allocated by the program Co-Director of Performing Arts.
- Maintains all non-lighting theatrical equipment and systems, monitors their conditions, and initiates corrective action in coordination with the Program Co-Director of Performing Arts.
- Coordinates with the team, including production-specific contracted personnel, student crew, and student workers, through annual programming by the Performing Arts Program, its partners, and resident companies, as well as in support of University events taking place at Performing Arts Program facilities.
- Trains all Performing Arts Program work-study and practicum students regarding production construction, and instruct in the proper use and maintenance of power tools and equipment and in all safety procedures.
- Schedules and supervises all Theatre and Dance Program work-study and practicum student work.
- Advises and supports the Program Co-Director of Performing Arts in the formulation of annual and seasonal Theatre and Dance Program budgets.
- Collaborates with the Program Co-Director of Performing Arts in supervising seasonal budgets, calendars, and design deadlines.
- Serves as an instructor with non-tenure-track faculty status in the Performing Arts Program located within the School of Arts and Humanities, teaching courses specific to practicum, stagecraft, and technical production per semester.
- Participates in the coordination of annual production and facility use schedules.
- Works alongside Performing Arts faculty colleagues in common pursuit of established academic objectives : develops instructional activities, updates course syllabi, writes course outlines, and creates and refines rubrics; defines and calculates student learning outcomes; and works with online University utilities such as Blackboard and Navigate.
- Engages in personal research, such as creative practice and / or scholarship, or teaching research and / or scholarship.
- Coordinates closely with the Program Co-Directors of Performing Arts Program and / or faculty in any mentoring and supervision of non-Gallaudet high school and / or college-aged students interning at the Performing Arts Program.
- Participates in coordination with Performing Arts Program faculty and staff on long- term planning for the Performing Arts Program and its partners and resident companies, including, but not limited to, assessment, capital improvement, event planning, and fundraising initiatives.
- Attends full Performing Arts faculty / staff meetings, production meetings, production department meetings, post-mortems, and full School of Arts and Humanities meetings, as scheduled.
- Makes recommendations for future technical materials and equipment purchases.
- Coordinates the Performing Arts Program Scene Shop.
- Oversees, and participates in, the construction, engineering, and safety for all scenery and effects.
- Produces time and material estimates, technical drawings, and other documentation as required.
- Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.

- Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
