Position Summary

The Assistant Technical Director provides direct support for campus and external rental events in Wentz Concert Hall, Madden Black Box Theatre, Meiley Swallow Theatre, Pfeiffer Auditorium and Heininger Auditorium - with the exception of designing academic Theatre Department productions.

This is not a faculty or academic teaching position. Instead, it's a highly collaborative, service-oriented role focused on ensuring exceptional onsite technical support, efficient venue operations, and a positive experience for everyone who steps on our stages - from students and faculty to guest artists and external partners.

Description of Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Technical Director and Production Manager in the organization, operation, and maintenance of all technical production equipment, expendables, and venue infrastructure.
  • Provide hands-on expertise in lighting, electrics, and rigging.
  • Operate and troubleshoot audio systems as required for supported events.
  • Supervise and guide student production staff, assisting with on-site leadership and skill development through on-the-job mentorship.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external partners, ensuring smooth technical coordination for campus and community events.
  • Serve as the on-site technical lead for assigned performances and activities.
  • Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, and maintenance of performance spaces and equipment; help maintain organized and safe work areas.
  • Reinforce and model safety best practices, including College and departmental safety policies.
  • Maintain detailed inventories of technical equipment and supplies, identifying needs for replacement or upgrade.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across campus to support the success of events that take place in the College's performing arts venues.
  • Any other duties as appropriately assigned by Production Manager or Technical Director

OTHER KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the College's mission, vision and values, and contribute to the advancement of the College's Strategic Plan.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to continuous quality improvement.
  • Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Customer service is critical to the success of any organization that deals with customers. Strong customer service skills can build retention and visibility as NCC strives to distinguish itself from its competitors. An individual in this position must possess the proficiency, wherewithal and knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality customer and personal services to both internal and external customers of the College.

  • Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, which will reflect positively on the College.
  • Ability to continuously demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills in dealing with students, faculty, administration and staff. Ability to work effectively as a member of small staff where cooperation and teamwork are the rule.
  • Proven proficiency in lighting, electrics, and rigging, with a working knowledge of basic analog and digital audio systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, communicate effectively, and provide excellent service to clients and collaborators. Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays as event schedules require.
  • Ability to be involved with several activities concurrently, to continually monitor their status, and to prioritize activities so that deadlines are met and overall effectiveness is maximized.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics

The ideal candidate is motivated by continuous growth and learning, enjoys working hands-on with production technologies, and takes pride in maintaining safe, professional, and welcoming spaces that foster creativity and collaboration across North Central's performing arts community.

As a member of a small collaborative team, this position requires flexibility, problem-solving in dynamic environments, and regular evening, weekend, and occasional holiday work. The role interacts daily with students, faculty, staff, guest artists, and the public-strong interpersonal skills and a service-oriented mindset are essential.
