Hiring: Two Faculty Positions (open rank) for Fall 2026

Position Title: Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Social Work

Appointment Type: Full-Time, Tenure-Track

Department: Social Work

Reports To: Dean, School of Social Work

The Howard University School of Social Work (HUSSW) invites applications for two open-rank faculty positions: Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Founded in 1867, and located in Washington, DC, in our nation’s capital, Howard University is a historically Black College/University and Research 1 (R1) institution with a distinguished legacy of advancing knowledge, leadership, and service in pursuit of social justice and equity. Serving 400 students, the Howard University School of Social Work offers two MSW concentrations: Direct Practice and Community, Administration, and Policy Practice. These concentrations are delivered through two program platforms, on-campus (Flagship) and online (Starship). The School offers specializations in criminal justice, health, mental health, family and child welfare, displaced populations, and social gerontology. We also offer three dual degree programs: MSW/MPH, MSW/MDiv, and MSW/MBA. Additionally, the School offers a Ph.D. in Social Work with specialized areas of scholarly inquiry.

Grounded in the University’s enduring motto, , the HUSSW prepares scholars and practitioners committed to improving human well-being and addressing the structural conditions that affect marginalized communities. The School’s guiding philosophy, the , further shapes its intellectual and practice framework through our curriculum and faculty scholarship that examine social and economic injustice, social determinants of health, behavioral health, poverty, and disparities effecting quality of life, particularly for African Americans and other historically oppressed populations. Our School has been continuously accredited during its 90-year history. We are a highly ranked graduate/professional program at the university having been ranked by the U.S. News and World Report among the country’s top-20 MSW programs.

Position Summary

The School of Social Work seeks candidates for two open-rank faculty positions (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor), with rank determined based on qualifications and experience. Successful candidates will be responsible for teaching, research and scholarship, and service consistent with the mission of the institution and the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education. The position emphasizes high-quality teaching, the development and/or maintenance of a sustainable research agenda, and meaningful contributions to service within the school, university, profession, and community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Instruction

  • Teach graduate social work courses to include use of appropriate technologies
  • Use inclusive, student-centered instructional strategies
  • Participate in curriculum development and assessment
  • Mentor MSW and PhD students

Research and Scholarship

  • Develop and/or execute a focused scholarly research agenda
  • Produce peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Pursue funding opportunities to support research and scholarship

Service

  • Participate in school and institutional service
  • Engage in professional and community service activities

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD or DSW) in Social Work or related field by time of appointment
  • MSW from a CSWE-accredited program
  • Demonstrated ability or potential for effective teaching, research, and scholarship that aligns with the school’s needs, mission, vision, and guiding philosophy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent teaching evaluations and experience teaching online
  • At least two years post-MSW practice experience and social work licensure
  • Applicants for associate and full professor ranks must have a record of funded research
